After having previously won the Open Championship, U.S. Open and PGA Championship, the Masters was the only major title missing from the Northern Irishman's résumé, but he rectified that over the weekend.
Entering the 2025 Masters, McIlroy's status as an all-time great was already cemented by virtue of his four career major titles.
However, McIlroy had not won a major since 2014, and his close calls and failures at the Masters loomed large in the eyes of many golf analysts and fans.
Back in 2011, McIlroy held a four-stroke lead through 54 holes at the Masters, only to collapse in the final round with an eight-over 80.
McIlroy came close to winning his first green jacket on a few occasions after that, including a second-place finish in 2022 and two other top-five results, but it continued to elude him.
This past weekend, McIlroy once again entered the fourth round of the Masters atop the leaderboard, leading Bryson DeChambeau by two strokes.
While DeChambeau faded, Rose surged, recording a six-under 66 to get back in the mix.
At the same time, it was a tough day for Rory, who shot a one-over 73, including missing a fairly short putt on the 18th hole, giving him a bogey and taking the Masters to a playoff.
The way things went for McIlroy on No. 18 suggested that Rose had all of the momentum in the playoff, but McIlroy locked in and played the hole of his life in the playoff, carding a birdie to earn his first green jacket and complete the career Grand Slam.
It had been over a decade since the 35-year-old veteran last won a major and 14 years since his 2011 Masters meltdown, but McIlroy put all of that in the past for good at Augusta on Sunday.
