Tiger Woods in 2002 remains the last golfer to successfully defend his Masters title. The other two who have pulled off the achievement are Jack Nicklaus and Nick Faldo.
History isn't on Scheffler's side.
Still, the 28-year-old is the betting favorite (+400) at DraftKings Sportsbook. In addition to winning two of the last three installments, he has three top-10 finishes through six events this season. He most recently tied for second place in the Houston Open.
Rory McIlroy is the second favorite (+650) behind Scheffler, which is a sign of his performance in 2025 along with the continued belief he can finally get over the hump at Augusta despite his results going in the wrong direction.
McIlroy opened this season by winning the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and then was victorious at the Players Championship in March.
However, the 35-year-old's Masters reputation will precede him in the eyes of some fans. He missed the cut altogether in 2021 and 2023, and he has been prone to experience one bad round that dooms his chances of donning a green jacket.
Jon Rahm will be carrying the banner for LIV Golf as its strongest contender in the field.
His title defense didn't go according to plan in 2024 as he opened with a one-over 73 in the first round and then shot four over in the second. Tying for 45th was his worst showing in the tournament.
Now that he's plying his trade on the LIV circuit, Rahm's efforts in 2025 might be going unnoticed by some fans. He has yet to register a victory but has been the third-best performer so far.
Nobody will be shocked if the two-time major champion is lifting the Masters trophy for the second time Sunday evening.
