Claressa Shields Suspended from Fighting in Michigan After Positive Marijuana Test
The Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission has suspended boxing superstar Claressa Shields from fighting in the state after she tested positive for marijuana, per Sky Sports.
"Shields' conduct as a licensed professional boxer constitutes an imminent threat to the integrity of professional boxing, the public interest and the safety of professional athletes," the commission said in a statement.
Shields addressed rumors of a failed drug test last week on social media:
The World Anti-Doping Agency continues to consider marijuana a banned in-competition substance despite its growing legalization. Shields reportedly tested positive for marijuana after providing an "oral fluid sample" following her heavyweight victory over Danielle Perkins on Feb. 3.
The WBO, which can't suspend boxers, has issued a "show notice" for Shields to explain the failed marijuana test.
The 29-year-old is a two-time Olympic gold medalist at middleweight and has held titles in five different weight classes during her professional fighting career. She has also held all four major titles (WBA,ย WBC,ย IBFย andย WBO) in three different weight classes.
She is now 16-0 in her professional career. While it is unclear if she will keep her belts, it would be a surprise if she lost them given the nature of her failed test. Had she tested positive for PEDs, for instance, being stripped of her belts would have been more feasible.
