NASCAR Xfinity Series at Daytona 2015 Results: Winner, Standings and Reaction

Austin Dillon won what proved to be a war of attrition Saturday night in the Subway Firecracker 250 at the Daytona International Speedway.

Dillon narrowly edged out Chase Elliott following a green-white-checkered finish. He celebrated with a jubilant slide across the infield, per NASCAR Xfinity:

Even Dillon's most ardent supporters will have to admit he received some good fortune near the finish. On the 96th lap, a crash claimed Brian Scott and Elliott Sadler—the top two drivers on the track. Scott looked destined to win, having led 84 laps on the night, but he was the creator of his own demise.

Hoping to hold onto his lead, he attempted to block Sadler from passing and wound up smashing into the wall, taking Sadler with him:

After the race, Scott owned up to his mistake:

That opened the door for Dillon, who did a great job of navigating his way through the minefield unscathed. Give the No. 33 car a lot of credit in that regard. It wasn't easy avoiding any of the collateral damage following Sadler and Scott's wreck.

As the saying goes, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. Dillon ran a solid race, but he almost certainly wouldn't have prevailed without Scott going into the wall.

Still, the win counts all the same. Here's a look at the top-10 finishers:

1Austin Dillon
2Elliott Sadler
3Chase Elliott
4Kasey Kahne
5Benny Gordon
6Dakoda Armstrong
7David Ragan
8Erik Jones
9Harrison Rhodes
10Ross Chastain

Scott falling to the middle of the pack also had an impact on the points standings. He sits in seventh after Saturday's race:

1Chris Buescher5602
2Chase Elliott5260
3Ty Dillon5170
4Regan Smith4930
5Elliott Sadler4890
6Darrell Wallace Jr.4720
7Brian Scott4570
8Ryan Reed4411
9Brendan Gaughan4380
10Daniel Suarez4370

A series of delays and cautions littered the race's early stages. Mother Nature intervened before the green flag could drop, causing an hour-long rain delay. Then, three cautions in the first 15 laps led to a rather disjointed start.

Eventually, the problems smoothed themselves out, and the drivers got down to actually racing. The Catch Fence Twitter feed apologized to all those fans who tuned in to see the cautions:

Ultimately, the Subway Firecracker 250 was the Brian Scott Show up until the final five laps. Dillon, Daniel Suarez and Joey Logano all led at least a lap, but Scott dominated the proceedings almost from the very beginning.

The No. 2 car started the race in second, so he was already in a position of strength when the green flag dropped. He wasted little time passing Suarez on the first lap to take the lead, and from that point forward, the field could only enjoy fleeting moments of success before Scott eventually took back first place.

As Scott's Twitter account joked, the rest of the drivers got a good look at the No. 2's patriotic rear bumper for much of Saturday night:

The big question late in the race was whether Scott and his crew's gamble to stay out on the final caution would prove to doom his chances of winning. That decision ensured he'd remain in first place, but you're always flirting with danger when you rely on having enough fuel to get to the finish line.

He received a little bit of luck in the form of a massive wreck on Lap 90 that involved 11 drivers. NASCAR on NBC provided a brief highlight of the crash:

By the time the race got back underway, only five laps remained.

And that's when the racing gods turned their collective backs on Scott, who continues to be snakebit on the Xfinity circuit. He now has 17 top-five and 70 top-10 finishes to his name without a victory.

Yahoo Sports' Nick Bromberg summed up his rotten finish best:

Scott's loss was Dillon's gain as the 25-year-old earned his third Xfinity win of the 2015 season and fifth of his career.

The Xfinity Series will shift to the Kentucky Speedway for next Friday's race. Perhaps Scott will have a better time on the track and break his losing streak.
