Jerry Dipoto Resigns as Angels GM: Latest Details and Reaction

Tim DanielsJul 1, 2015

Los Angeles Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto is leaving the organization after an internal struggle with manager Mike Scioscia about how to maximize the team's effectiveness.

Bill Stoneman, who previously was the team's GM from 2000-2007, has been named interim GM, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.

Dipoto confirmed the news to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County RegisterBob Nightengale of USA Today originally reported that Dipoto packed his bags after the latest round of arguments with the coaching staff. Nightengale noted that the GM wanted players more focused on the scouting and analytics being provided by the front office.

The Angels, who are second in the AL West with a 41-37 record, have yet to confirm an exit for Dipoto. Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reported that he's "definitely out," however, and that his exit is apparently due to his losing the power struggle with Scioscia.

However, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reported from Scioscia that there's never been a power struggle, but the manager did admit to being hard-headed.

Although Los Angeles has been able to maintain a record above .500, the team ranks 12th out of 15 teams in the American League in runs scored. That's well below expectations for a lineup highlighted by Mike Trout and Albert Pujols.

Speaking of Pujols, the USA Today report noted that the first baseman was also involved in a confrontation with Dipoto last week. When asked about it, Pujols replied, "That's none of your business. Whatever happens in the clubhouse stays in the clubhouse."

Craig Calcaterra of HardballTalk pointed out that Dipoto's resignation bucks a recent trend among front offices:

The exact details of what was going on behind the scenes may never be known. That said, a toxic environment was seemingly becoming more problematic in recent weeks, and Dipoto must have decided it was time to leave before things got worse.

He took over as general manager in late 2011. Meanwhile, Scioscia has been the team's manager since 2000 and led the team to a World Series title in 2002. So it doesn't come as a surprise that when push came to shove, the two-time AL Manager of the Year was left standing.

That doesn't mean it's the best thing for the organization moving forward, though. Dipoto has a strong analytical mind and should be able to land a job elsewhere, should he want to remain in baseball.
