Making Sense of 5-Star Malik Henry's Transfer from IMG Academy

Brian PedersenJun 5, 2015

The chance to work with Heisman-winning quarterback Chris Weinke at a topnotch athletic institution like IMG Academy lured Malik Henry across the country this past winter. But less than five months after announcing he would move from California to Florida, that seemingly perfect marriage has come to an end.

IMG coach Kevin Wright announced Thursday that Henry, a 5-star quarterback and Florida State commit from Westlake Village, California, would no longer be attending the Bradenton, Florida, school.

"We have made a decision and Malik Henry will not be returning to IMG Academy next year," Wright said in a statement, per Noles247. "Malik is a very talented athlete and we wish him the very best in his future."

Rated by 247Sports as the third-best pro-style passer in the country and the No. 24 overall prospect in the 2016 recruiting class, Henry has already attended three high schools. He played his sophomore and junior seasons at Westlake High School after transferring from Oaks Christian in Westlake Village following his freshman year.

Henry announced his transfer to IMG in January, and his father Marchell told Evan Barnes of the Los Angeles Daily News that the opportunity for Henry to work with Weinke—the former Florida State quarterback who won the 2000 Heisman and is regarded as one of the top QB coaches in the country—"seemed like a natural fit for his evolution to get ready for the next level."

Yet just four weeks after Henry announced his move, Weinke (who served as IMG's football director and coached its first two varsity teams) left to be the quarterbacks coach for the NFL's St. Louis Rams. The school hired ex-NFL star Steve Walsh as football director and Wright, who had run prep programs in Indiana, Kentucky and Oklahoma, as head coach.

No official reason has been given for Henry's departure, though speculation has centered on a difference in philosophy (and offensive systems) between Weinke and Wright.

"He came to run a pro-style system, and when that didn't happen there was an adjustment," Bleacher Report recruiting expert Sanjay Kirpalani said, noting that Wright planned to implement a spread offense at IMG for the 2015 season. "He didn't come all the way across the country to run the same system. He was there to prepare for college."

Tom D'Angelo, who covers Florida State for the Palm Beach Post, weighed in on the latter possibility on Twitter:

Henry released a statement, per Noles247, saying that the move was a mutual decision between himself, his parents and the IMG coaching staff:

"Things changed while I was there and I didn't handle the change well," Henry said, adding that his focus now is on preparing for the Elite 11 quarterback competition this weekend in California.

Henry also reaffirmed his commitment to Florida State, to whom he pledged in November over Notre Dame, Ohio State and UCLA. "This will have no bearing on my commitment to Florida State. I am still firmly committed to FSU and I look forward to a bright future there."

Josh Newberg of 247Sports wrote Thursday that "where Malik Henry attends high school will not have any impact on the college he attends," and he cited a source close to the FSU program, noting that the Seminoles remain "100 percent committed to Malik Henry."

It's unknown where Henry will end up for his final high school season, though potential options include Long Beach (California) Poly, which is the other school he considered before transferring to IMG, or Oaks Christian. Henry's coach at Westlake, Jim Benkert, who left for the crosstown school shortly before Henry transferred, now runs the Oaks Christian program.

Henry appeared in three games as a freshman at Oaks Christian in 2012, according to MaxPreps, completing two passes for three yards and gaining six yards on one rush. He told David Wharton of the Los Angeles Times that he chose to transfer to Westlake because he "wanted to get on the field."

In two seasons at Westlake, Henry threw for 4,413 yards and 36 touchdowns, adding another 413 rushing yards and 10 scores.
