Philadelphia Eagles: 5 Most Likely 1st-Round Scenarios

Cody SwartzApr 28, 2015

There are just two days until arguably the most anticipated draft day in the Philadelphia Eagles' history. What Chip Kelly does could be his defining moment as the team's head coach, and he could set the tone for the Eagles being possible contenders in 2015 or serious contenders within the NFC.

Marcus Mariota is the dream scenario for Eagles fans, but there are other routes Kelly could take. He may really go with Sam Bradford next season, in which case, his draft picks can be utilized on building up the rest of the roster. Don't be surprised to see Kelly trade a handful of players from the previous regime, notably linebacker Mychal Kendricks or cornerback Brandon Boykin.

It's nearly impossible to predict what Kelly will do in any given scenario, but here's a shot in the dark at what he may try to do this coming weekend.

Chip Kelly Pulls off Blockbuster Trade for Marcus Mariota

1 of 5

This is the best possible scenario for most Philadelphia Eagles fans: Kelly finds a way to move up from No. 20 in the draft to pick No. 2 to acquire Mariota.

Is that really possible?

It depends how much Kelly is willing to give up. He may need Mariota to fall several more spots, but either way, he's likely going to give up a combination of the following: this year's first-round pick, next year's first-round pick, Bradford, Fletcher Cox, Kendricks and Boykin.

It could be a three-way trade involving Philip Rivers. It could be a leapfrog trade, in which Kelly sends Bradford to the Cleveland Browns for a draft pick and then uses that draft pick in a way to move up.

Or it could be something that none of us have even thought of, except for Kelly.

Eagles Pick CB Byron Jones at No. 20

2 of 5

Byron Jones is an absolute freak of an athlete, and we know Kelly likes athletes.

Byron Jones will become the fifth active NFL player with a SPARQ score more than three standard deviations above average.

He's a tall, long corner who ran a blazingly fast 40-yard dash and set a world record with his broad jump. He's a younger version of Byron Maxwell with the potential to be a shutdown player at the NFL level.

As a rookie, Jones would have the opportunity to push for a starting spot opposite Maxwell, given that both Walter Thurmond and Boykin are better suited for the slot.

Eagles Trade Down in Round 1 for More Draft Selections

3 of 5

Maybe Kelly won't see a player worth picking at the 20th spot. Last year, the Philadelphia Eagles targeted six players in the first round and then traded down and took Marcus Smith when their six players were off the board.

That didn't work out so well, but that doesn't mean it's a bad plan in 2015. Kelly may trade with a team like the New England Patriots, one led by a head coach who can be aggressive in the same way Kelly can be.

There are a handful of players Kelly could still likely get near the end of Round 1—Nelson Agholor, Shaq Thompson, Eric Rowe, Breshad Perriman or T.J. Clemmings, to name a few. And getting a third-round pick or so in addition may be something Kelly can then use when he inevitably wants to move back up in a lower round.

Eagles Pick OT Jake Fisher at No. 20

4 of 5

Jake Fisher is Kelly's kind of player. Fisher fulfills the main requirements: He attended the University of Oregon, he's insanely athletic and he possesses the versatility to play both offensive tackle and guard.

Fisher should be available when the Philadelphia Eagles pick at the 20th spot. If Kelly does take him, he's going to get every opportunity to compete for the starting right guard spot in 2015. Fisher is similar to Lane Johnson in the fact that he's played other positions; Fisher was a high school tight end and has played both tackle spots and guard at the collegiate level.

Eventually, the Eagles are going to move on from All-Pro left tackle Jason Peters. They will shift Johnson to the blind side and will move Fisher to right tackle, and that will give Kelly two supremely talented offensive tackles who can get to the second level with ease.

Chip Kelly Moves Up for Surefire 1st-Round Prospect Who Falls

5 of 5

If you haven't paid attention to the Philadelphia offseason so far, Kelly is bold. Kelly doesn't care what anyone thinks of him, and he doesn't care what he has to give up or pay to get the players he wants.

He paid $63 million for cornerback Maxwell, despite Maxwell being clearly the fourth-best member of the Legion of Boom. He signed DeMarco Murray to a massive contract. And there's a good chance he'll make a move on draft day.

If the team can't get Mariota, Kelly could still trade up. Maybe Vic Beasley will fall, and Kelly will decide he has to have him. Maybe it will be a stud wide receiver like Kevin White or DeVante Parker sneaking into the teens.

Or maybe it will be a player we don't even expect but one who Kelly has had his eye on.
