Seth Rollins vs. Randy Orton: Winner and Reaction from WWE Extreme Rules 2015

Mike ChiariApr 26, 2015

In his first title defense since winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania, Seth Rollins defeated Randy Orton in a steel cage match Sunday night at Extreme Rules.

The clincher was Rollins using Orton's signature move of the RKO:

The WWE Universe Twitter account wondered if that was legal, considering Orton was banned from using the signature move:

Without the use of the RKO, Orton was forced to deliver plenty of pedigrees on Rollins:

With Kane as the Gatekeeper of the match, fans were treated to plenty of action in the steel cage. But in the end, this photo summed up the night, via WWE Universe:

Rollins shocked the WWE Universe at "The Showcase of the Immortals" when he successfully cashed in his Money in the Bank contract and defeated both Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns in a Triple Threat match to win the company's top title for the first time.

While The Architect of The Shield was riding high after such a massive accomplishment, his celebratory mood didn't last long. Orton established himself as the No. 1 contender by beating Reigns and Ryback in a Triple Threat match on Raw, and he reminded Rollins that he had the formula needed to beat him, according to WWE Universe:

Lost in Rollins' WrestleMania triumph was the fact that he was defeated by Orton earlier in the night, courtesy of an all-time great RKO. With Orton seemingly having Rollins' number, there was some trepidation on the champ's part leading up to Extreme Rules.

That led to Rollins doing everything in his power to put the challenger at a disadvantage. He even got Kane to purposely lose a match to him so that he could set a stipulation for the title contest.

The entire Authority did everything it could to keep The Viper from winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship:

Rollins did his part by banning Orton's devastating RKO, but WWE's Apex Predator countered by ensuring the match would be contested within the confines of a steel cage in an effort to prevent outside interference.

When push came to shove, though, the stipulations ultimately favored Rollins. He was able to overcome Orton and escape the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois, with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

The result wasn't shocking since Rollins just won the title at WrestleMania, but it creates more questions than answers as to who the 28-year-old Superstar will face next.

A rematch with Orton is undoubtedly possible, but it is far from guaranteed. Reigns figures to reenter the title picture soon after getting a raw deal at WrestleMania, while Lesnar continues to wait in the wings.

Whatever the case, Rollins' victory at Extreme Rules suggests that WWE is committed to seeing what the up-and-coming star can accomplish in main events moving forward.

Regardless of how he pulled it off, beating a wrestler of Orton's caliber in his initial title defense is certainly a huge feather in Rollins' cap.
