Vazquez Facing 12-Month Recovery From Tommy John Surgery
Thursday, April 2
Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reported that the Red Sox announced Vazquez needs Tommy John surgery. The team would later confirm that the surgery was successful.
ESPN's Gordon Edes had manager John Farrell's thoughts on Vazquez reportedly facing a year-long recovery:
"It’s a blow to us, a blow to him. This is a major interruption to his development at the major league level. But given the success rate of the procedure, we’re fully expecting a complete recovery and get back on track, which is a very promising career for a young, extremely talented catcher.
Twelve months is typically a realistic time frame, provided there are no issues along the way.’
"
Vazquez is only 24 years old with a bright future and could be a cornerstone in Boston for years to come if he lives up to his potential.
He hit .240 with one home run and 20 RBI in limited playing time in 2014, but he is seen more as a defensive catcher who can control the running game than an offensive force. Baseball America ranked him as the No. 12 prospect in the Red Sox organization after the 2013 season.
Catchers Ryan Hanigan and Sandy Leon will have to step up while Vazquez is out.
