Beal Comments on Injury, Status Unknown for Game 2
Sunday, May 3
Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPNNewYork.com provided Beal's thoughts on his status:
Beal was injured after he stepped on Al Horford's foot in the fourth quarter, briefly exiting before coming back on the floor. He finished with 28 points and seven rebounds.
The guard underwent an X-ray following the game, which came back negative, via J. Michael of CSN Washington.
The Wizards, who have been decimated by injuries at the wing spots all season, will likely rely on Otto Porter eating minutes at shooting guard for the time being. Ramon Sessions might also slide over to the 2 for a spell.
In his third NBA season, Beal's inability to stay healthy for long stretches is becoming something of a calling card. He has missed 15-plus games in two of his first three seasons and played only 73 in the other.
Leg injuries have largely been the culprit, costing him two separate lengthy spells this season and nearly the whole second half of his rookie campaign. While Beal is still a promising player, those concerns have stunted his growth. After busting out as a clear second in command to point guard John Wall in 2013-14, Beal has taken a back seat, and his numbers have dropped in nearly every counting category.
It'll be interesting to see how the Wizards choose to handle Beal's injury. They're going to need a full squad against Atlanta, which had the best record in the East running away. Porter had a promising first-round series against Toronto but is inconsistent. Randy Wittman may even have to play Rasual Butler to get proper spacing.
Either way, it's not a promising look.
