Jim Rice: Misquoted in Talking About Current Players

David O'BrienAug 23, 2009

Last week, Newly instated Hall of Famer Jim Rice said that Derek Jeter should not be considered a role model.

Rice Spoke to LLWS players said how Major leaguers are more focused on getting big contracts and personal goals rather than the game of baseball itself.

"You see a Manny Ramirez, you see an A-Rod ,you see ... Guys that I played against and with, these guys you're talking about cannot compare,".

At a press conference he was asked about the current players that he thinks deserve to be in the Hall of Fame, Rice said Ichiro,Ken Griffey jr. and Jim Thome.

He also said he believes current Hall of Famers who never cheated  do not want players steroid-users along with them in the HOF.

He took the little league players to basically continue to work hard and repsect their parents and coaches.

Now he has come out and said that he was misquoted.

"When you think of the Yankees, who do you think of? Jeter and Rodriguez. Anyone who knows the game, anyone with any common sense knows which players give you leadership. And think about the way they play every day. Can you see either A-Rod or Jeter going into the manager's office and saying, 'Skip, I don't feel like playing today?' "

I agree with that statement, many people were furious about what he said but took everything out of context. There are many players that go out on the field every single day and constantly try to improve on their skills.

Rice said how all the guys he played with and everyone that was before him paved the way to Major Leaguers of today. Current MLB players have to work harder to get ahead in this day in age rather than back when Rice was playing.

This is a league that has been ridden with steroid allegations and some of the greatest records now have asterisks, most known would be Barry Bond's breaking Hank Aaron's all-time home-run record.

Of course not all players of Rice's generation were clean either, There was cocaine and other drugs being used. Nobody knows who was using PEDs during the time of some of the greatest players.

The steroids issue in baseball will probably never resolved, This subject comes up time and time again and Rice has just added fuel to that fire.

Rice should apologize to Jeter but not everything he said should be critized because there is some truth to it.
