Tom Coughlin Contract: Latest News and Rumors on Giants Head Coach

Timothy RappFeb 23, 2015

Last offseason, Tom Coughlin signed a one-year contract extension to ensure he wouldn't go into the 2014 NFL season in the final year of his contract as a lame-duck coach with the New York Giants. After a 6-10 season, Coughlin's future with the team has remained in some doubt beyond that contract, but he is reportedly expected to sign another one-year extension.

Coughlin Reportedly Will Sign Another 1-Year Extension

Monday, Feb. 23

The Giants were never likely to give Coughlin a long-term contract extension after failing to reach the postseason again, but the team isn't going to let him go into 2015 as a lame-duck coach, either, at least according to Kimberly Jones of NFL.com:

Coughlin spoke about the talks on NFL Network, via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk:

"

Asked this morning on NFL Network about reports that he's in discussions on a contract extension, Coughlin hinted that the deal will get done soon.

"Something will come out on that shortly," Coughlin said. "Those things are important to all of us — I'm not going to downplay that — but I don't spend a lot of time thinking about that stuff."

"

The Giants have now missed the postseason in three straight seasons and have posted losing records two years in a row. However, the fact that Coughlin and the Giants have won the Super Bowl twice since 2007 and have reached the postseason five times since he took over as coach in 2004 has likely saved his job.

While the Giants are currently rebuilding, there are reasons to be excited. Last year's breakout rookie wide receiver, Odell Beckham Jr., highlights the list while getting Victor Cruz back from a torn patellar tendon should help to improve the offense.

The Giants have a lot of improving to do on defense, particularly against the run—they finished 30th in the NFL in rushing yards allowed per game last year—but the return of Steve Spagnuolo as defensive coordinator, the man who constructed the defense that shocked the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, should help to spark that unit.

For Coughlin, this might be his last season to prove he's still the right man for the job in New York. If the Giants fail to reach the postseason again, Coughlin likely won't be signing another one-year deal, and he won't be a lame-duck coach, either, because the team could very well decide to move on.
