Jared Sullinger Injury Update: Celtics Star out for Season Due to Foot Fracture
Boston Celtics forward Jared Sullinger will miss the remainder of the 2014-15 season after tests revealed a stress fracture in his left foot, the team announced Sunday.
Brad Stevens spoke about the loss of Sullinger, via the Celtics' Twitter account:
Sullinger, 22, was diagnosed with a "stress injury" in his foot when the Celtics returned to action after the All-Star break. He suffered the injury in Boston's 89-88 win over the Atlanta Hawks on Feb. 11 and did not play in Friday's loss to the Sacramento Kings.
“There was just a little discomfort. I tried to play and it just didn’t feel right, so I checked myself out of practice,” Sullinger told reporters. “They didn’t tell me a lot. They just told me that I’ll be out for a little bit. It’s not a lot of pain.”
A first-round pick in 2012, Sullinger was in the midst of his best professional season. He set or matched career highs in points (14.4), rebounds (8.1) and assists (2.4) while starting in 49 of his 51 appearances. The Celtics have rebounded and shot better with Sullinger on the floor, though they're still being outscored by nearly three points per 100 possessions, per Basketball-Reference.
Tyler Zeller started in Sullinger's place Friday. When fully healthy, the Celtics will probably rotate Zeller, Brandon Bass, Kelly Olynyk and the recently acquired Jonas Jerebko between their two big-man positions.
As for Sullinger, he will have plenty of time to rehab and recover in order to build on what was shaping up to be a breakout 2014-15 campaign when he takes the floor for next season.
