NY Giants Twitter Mailbag: Super Bowl Eve Edition

Patricia TrainaJan 30, 2015

As we count down to Super Bowl XLIX, let’s take a quick look at what’s on the minds of New York Giants fans before the big game.

Thanks for the question, Ceri. Earlier this week, I wrote an analysis about what safeties might be the most desired by the Giants if they were unable to re-sign Antrel Rolle.

Of the list I came up with, New England’s Devin McCourty and Buffalo’s Da’Norris Searcy would probably be the top two must-haves if the price was right.

However, those two are likely to draw big contracts, if not a franchise tag (at least in McCourty’s case), so I’m thinking the Giants might have to go with a middle-of-the-road priced free agent.

Jeromy Miles

My list included Jeromy Miles of the Baltimore Ravens, with whom defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo would be very familiar, by the way.

What is appealing about Miles is that he can play both safety positions—remember versatility is preferred wherever possible, and Miles appears to be an athlete who can play both positions at a reasonably high level.

I do think the Giants are going to give Nat Berhe and Cooper Taylor, their only two safeties currently under contract, a chance to step up and earn starting jobs. The problem is that as of right now, neither really has a lot of experience.

From what I’ve seen in camp, Berhe and Taylor look like they're box safeties. Thus I'd say free safety might be the bigger need.

Joe, from a sentimental perspective, Mark Bavaro is definitely worthy of Hall of Fame consideration. He was a beast as a blocker, as New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who was on Bill Parcells’ Giants coaching staff at the time Bavaro was an active player, told Bob Glauber of Newsday.

Mark Bavaro

“He blocked [Eagles defensive end] Reggie White better than most tackles blocked him," Belichick said. “That alone should put him in the Hall of Fame. This guy was a great football player.”

With all that said, I think the Hall of Fame voting committee looks at the impact a player had on the game.

While Bavaro was the complete package for the Giants until a knee injury cut short his career, I don’t think his career stats—351 receptions for 4,733 yards and 39 touchdowns, according to Pro-Football-Reference.com—are going to earn him serious consideration for the Hall of Fame.

Thanks for the question, Joseph. I get the sense that the Giants are looking for Larry Donnell and Adrien Robinson to advance in their respective developments.

What will be interesting is what they do with soon-to-be unrestricted free agent Daniel Fells. Fells, I thought, was the best blocker. He also showed that he had a decent pair of hands as a receiver as well.

Do the Giants re-sign him for another year or replace him? I think if Fells is open to another one-year minimum deal, he will be back here to compete for a roster spot.

I also believe that the Giants will add at least one if not two more tight end prospects, perhaps even a late-round draft pick such as Blake Bell out of Oklahoma, whom I wrote about in this article.

I definitely think it makes sense to increase the competition. I don't know how they feel about the tight ends in the draft, but I suspect if worse comes to worst, they would indeed be willing to get by another season with Fells.
