Giants Become 1st Team Since 1989 with 7 Sacks in 3 Straight Games

Bleacher Report MilestonesDec 16, 2014

While largely struggling on defense this season, the New York Giants recorded seven sacks during Sunday's 24-13 win over the Washington Redskins to become the first team since the 1989 Minnesota Vikings with seven or more sacks in three consecutive games, per ESPN Stats & Info.

Big Blue previously tallied seven sacks in a 25-24 Week 13 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars and then managed eight sacks in a 36-7 Week 14 win over the Tennessee Titans.

The onslaught of sacks took a toll on opponents, as the Giants have faced five different signal-callers over the three-game period due to injuries suffered by Washington Redskins quarterback Colt McCoy and Tennessee Titans quarterback Zach Mettenberger.

Of the five quarterbacks to take a snap against New York in the past three games, only McCoy escaped without taking a single sack—though he also attempted just seven passes before aggravating a preexisting neck injury.

While not especially prolific from a pass-rushing perspective for most of the season, the Giants now rank fourth in the NFL with 41 sacks, trailing only the Buffalo Bills (49), Philadelphia Eagles (47) and Baltimore Ravens (45).

Of course, those other three teams all have winning records, and they didn't simply pad their statistics against bottom-of-the-barrel opponents.

The Giants' 5-9 record may not look very good, but it's far better than the combined 7-35 mark owned by the Redskins, Titans and Jaguars.

Jacksonville has taken an NFL-high 62 sacks this season while the Redskins are second at 53, and the Titans are tied for sixth at 42.

Big Blue's Week 16 opponent, the St. Louis Rams, has surrendered 41 sacks for the season, good for eighth-most in the league.

If the Giants can come away with seven or more sacks again, they'll join the 1976 San Francisco 49ers as the only teams since at least 1970 to reach that mark in four consecutive games, per Pro-Football-Reference.com's play index.
