Knicks Guard J.R. Smith Suspended 1 Game: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction
New York Knicks guard J.R. Smith is in trouble for his on-court antics once again. This time, the NBA has come down on him for hitting Washington guard Glen Rice Jr. in the groin during a game Tuesday night.
According to Bleacher Report's Howard Beck, the league announced that Smith has been suspended one game for his actions:
The incident came during the fourth quarter of Washington's victory. As you can see in the video embedded below, Smith had the ball at halfcourt and appeared to blatantly punch at Rice below the belt to get around him.
Smith discussed the suspension on Friday, according to ESPN's Ian Begley:
In a cruel bit of irony for Rice, he was actually called for a blocking foul on the play.
Marc Berman of the New York Post reported after the game that people with the Wizards believe Smith struck Rice intentionally.
"According to a Wizards team source," Berman wrote, "Washington believes Smith did it intentionally with the Knicks trailing by double digits. Smith didn’t make himself available for comment after the game."
Smith will miss Wednesday's game against the Detroit Pistons as the result of the suspension.
Through four games this season, Smith is averaging 7.5 points, 4.0 assists and 1.8 rebounds per game while shooting just 38.7 percent from the field. Like everyone on the roster, he's still trying to get acclimated to new head coach Derek Fisher's triangle offense.
Smith is no stranger to controversy on the court. He made headlines last season for untying opponents' shoes during games and was fined $50,000 for doing it after being warned.
While that incident looks pedestrian compared to this most recent one, there is an unfortunate pattern developing that hasn't slowed down.
