The struggling New York Giants hit the road for a tough matchup with the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday and will be looking to avoid their fourth loss in a row. The Giants have failed to beat the spread in each of their last three games during their current skid while the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks have won two straight but have failed to cover their past four.

Point spread: Seahawks opened as 7.5-point favorites; the total was 43.5 early in the week, according to sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark. (Line updates and matchup report)

Why the Giants can cover the spread

New York is facing a Seattle team that has had a difficult time beating the number lately despite beating its opponents. The Seahawks have won their last two games by a combined 10 points, and the point spread for their last game against the Oakland Raiders was even higher than that.

The Raiders were able to stay within 13 points and cover, so why can't the Giants keep this game closer than double digits? New York has performed well against NFC West opponents on the road with a 7-1 mark against the spread in the last eight games. If the Raiders can cover at Seattle, so can the Giants.

Why the Seahawks can cover the spread

Seattle is 6-3-1 against the spread in the past 10 meetings with New York and would have blown out Oakland had it not been for a blocked punt return for a touchdown that ignited a second-half run for the cover. The Seahawks led the Raiders 24-3 at halftime but allowed rookie quarterback Derek Carr to throw two touchdown passes to tight end Mychal Rivera in the second half, including the last one with less than two minutes remaining to beat the number.

While Giants quarterback Eli Manning is much better than Carr, he is still mistake-prone and will probably have trouble dealing with the crowd noise. That could be a recipe for disaster for New York and give Seattle the opportunity to pile it on.

Smart Pick

Some teams are dead at this point of the season, and you can count the Giants as one of them. They have made a nice run recently with two Super Bowl titles in the past seven years, but the Seahawks remain a very difficult team to beat on their home field. Sure, Seattle has not looked great lately, but this is a team that is fully capable of blowing any visitor to CenturyLink Field out at any time.

The Seahawks also still have a lot to play for right now, as they are chasing the NFC West-leading Arizona Cardinals and must win the games they are supposed to win—like this one. While Manning has enjoyed some success in his career on the road, he has never played in such a noisy environment as he will Sunday. Take Seattle to win by at least two touchdowns.
