Breeders' Cup 2014 Results: Tracking Winners, Prize Money Payouts on Friday
Even though the Triple Crown races individually may grab more headlines, this weekend's Breeders' Cup is the biggest of the horse racing year. With a total of 13 races over two days, there's more money at stake and it's all headlined by the Breeders' Cup Classic on Saturday.
This year's event is particularly notable because California Chrome, who came so close to winning the Triple Crown, is back in action. He's one of 15 horses competing in the $5 million finale on Saturday. There's a lot of business to take care of before it gets to that point.
Here's a recap of all four races from Friday as they happen, including payouts and more from Santa Anita Park.
| Race | Winner | Total Purse |
| Juvenile Turf | Winner: Hootenanny | $1 Million |
| Dirt Mile | Winner: Goldencents | $1 Million |
| Juvenile Fillies Turf | Winner: Lady Eli | $1 Million |
| Longines Distaff | Untapable | $2 Million |
Distaff Race
| Result | Horse | Morning-Line Odds |
| Win | Untapable | 53-20 |
| Place | Don't Tell Sophia | 13-2 |
| Show | Iotapa | 17-2 |
The main event of the Friday schedule also happens to be the longest race of the day at 1.125 miles. It also has the biggest purse of the day at $2 million. The field is comprised of 11 fillies aged at least three years, with the favorite being Untapable at 53-20 odds, via OddsShark.com.
Untapable would make it three favorites in four races to come away with a victory, pulling away in the final stretch. There was some controversy, as Jennie Rees of The Louisville Courier-Journal noted that officials were going to look at a bumping incident before making the final decision:
This was the first race with a group of horses huddled together with a chance to win down the stretch. Tiz Midnight had a slim lead for most of the race before Untapable took the lead with 200 yards to go and didn't relinquish it.
Jockey Rosie Napravnik, who led Untapable to victory, said after the race that the horse was spot on today, via Dubai Racing Channel:
There's still nine races to go on Sunday, but they will have a lot to live up to following three terrific finishes and one dominant performance from Lady Eli.
Juvenile Fillies Turf Race
| Result | Horse | Morning-Line Odds |
| Win | Lady Eli | 8-1 |
| Place | Sunset Glow | 3-1 |
| Show | Osaila | 5-1 |
The two-year-old females took center stage in the third race of the day, the mile-long Juvenile Fillies Turf Race. It was a full field with 14 horses and no scratches, led by morning-line favorite Sunset Glow. She had all the pressure on her after the first two races were won by the odds-on favorites.
For awhile, it even looked like Sunset Glow was going to make it 3-for-3 with favorites winning. Then Lady Eli had a brilliant finish down the stretch to win going away, leaving everyone in the dust, as you can see in this Twitter photo from The Breeders' Cup:
At The Races summed up the run by Lady Eli and jockey Gary Stevens perfectly:
Even though it won't be a lot of comfort to the team, Sunset Glow really had nothing to be ashamed of with this second place finish. The horse ran a great race before running out of steam late, but Lady Eli was on a different level that it probably wouldn't have mattered anyway.
Dirt Mile Race
| Result | Horse | Morning-Line Odds |
| Win | Goldencents | 7-5 |
| Place | Tapiture | 6-1 |
| Show | Pants On Fire | 11-1 |
After giving the young guns their moment to start the Breeders' Cup, the Dirt Mile Race allowed the aged veterans aged three years or older a chance to shine. This race featured a smaller field, with just nine horses following Handsome Mike's scratch.
This was strictly a two-horse race at the start, with Goldencents and Vicar's In Trouble taking a commanding lead out of the gate. After fighting neck-and-neck for most of the race, Vicar's In Trouble fell back and Goldencents held on to win after a late charge from Tapiture.
Goldencents was the overwhelming favorite coming into the race, listed at a 7-5 morning line favorite on OddsShark.com. That might have been the worst position to be in, as no favorite had ever won this race before, via Raceday 360:
Matt Hegarty of The Daily Racing Form pointed out how jockey Rafael Bejarano rode that race, while adding a quote from the jockey that aired on the NBC Sports Network broadcast:
It wasn't a great showcase for Bejarano, as he rode the horse hard for most of the race and it almost cost him in the end. Goldencents did bail him out, so it's hard to argue with the result right now.
Unfortunately for Vicar's In Trouble, the horse lost the race and was vanned off the track afterwards, per Jennie Rees of The Louisville Courier-Journal:
That's two straight races where the favorites have won. This is really putting a damper on all those people who believe in the randomness of sports.
Juvenile Turf Race
| Result | Horse | Morning Line Odds |
| Win | Hootenanny | 12-5 |
| Place | Luck of the Kitten | 12-1 |
| Show | Daddy D T | 25-1 |
Friday's first race was the 14-horse Juvenile Turf Race featuring two-year-old males. The original field was 15 but Aktabantay was scratched, though that didn't have any impact on the odds. Hootenanny entered the race as a 12-5 favorite, according to Odds Shark, and started from the No. 5 post.
It turns out the oddsmakers knew what they were doing, because Hootenanny came from behind down the stretch to win the race, via Breeders' Cup on Twitter:
Luck of the Kitten came out of the third gate strong, taking a big lead into the first turn, and held the lead coming into the stretch but couldn't hold it long enough to secure a victory.
The victory was also noteworthy, as Claire Novak of Blood Horse noted on Twitter that it was the first Breeders' Cup win for trainer Wesley Ward:
Pat Cummings of Dubai Race Night offered praise of Hootenanny's jockey Frankie Dettori after the come-from-behind victory:
It may not have gone as scripted for Hootenanny, but the first race of the Breeders' Cup was an excellent way to set the tone. You went from the thrill of seeing a small surprise out of the gate with Luck of the Kitten, then he controlled the tempo all race before getting upended by the favorite.
The final three races on Day 1 at the Breeders' Cup have a lot to live up to.
