Breeders' Cup 2014: Post Positions Info, Vegas Odds for All Horses on Friday
This weekend's Breeders' Cup is highlighted by the Classic, but Friday's races offer fans of horse racing a wide range of horses and events to keep an eye on.
Santa Anita Park will play host to the two-day event. Many will come for the scenic view of the mountains in the background, but Friday's races should attract serious fans as well.
Juvenile races are potential indicators of horses that will compete in major events in the future. Those in attendance at Santa Anita Park will be able to get a firsthand look at said horses. Needless to say, big racing fans should familiarize themselves with the odds and the post positions before the races begin.
Below is all the information you need to get informed about the Breeders' Cup's Day 1 events.
Juvenile Turf
| 1 | Wet Sail | Jamie Spencer | 15-1 |
| 2 | Daddy D T | Corey Nakatani | 15-1 |
| 3 | Luck of the Kitten | Mike Smith | 8-1 |
| 4 | Commemorative | James Doyle | 8-1 |
| 5 | Hootenanny | Lanfranco Dettori | 3-1 |
| 6 | Conquest Typhoon | Patrick Husbands | 12-1 |
| 7 | War Envoy | Ryan Moore | 9-2 |
| 8 | Offering Plan | Irad Ortiz Jr. | 20-1 |
| 9 | Startup Nation | Joel Rosario | 12-1 |
| 10 | Imperia | Javier Castellano | 6-1 |
| 11 | International Star | John Velazquez | 15-1 |
| 12 | Lawn Ranger | Chris Landeros | 20-1 |
| 13 | Danny Boy | Julien Leparoux | 20-1 |
| 14 | Faithful Creek | Kieran Fallon | 20-1 |
| AE | Papacoolpapacool | Joseph Talamo | 30-1 |
The Juvenile Turf post was shaken up Thursday when Aktabantay was scratched from the race. Trainer Hugo Palmer broke the news on Twitter:
"Having moved beautifully this morning Aktabantay was found to have a sore foot back at the barn. He has been scratched from #BC14 Devastated
— Hugo Palmer (@hugopalmeracing) October 30, 2014"
In Aktabantay's stead, Faithful Creek, another European horse, will move into the field.
The Guardian's Greg Wood highlighted Faithful Creek's overall struggles: "Faithful Creek has won only one of his six races to date, a maiden event at Epsom, and finished third behind Aidan O'Brien's John F Kennedy, a leading contender for next season’s Classics, in a Group 3 race at Leopardstown last time out."
The European side was dealt a big blow with Aktabantay forced to the stable, but other horses are ready to represent. War Envoy, Wet Sail and Commemorative could very well win despite varying odds.
Dirt Mile
| 1 | Goldenscents | Rafael Bejarano | 6-5 |
| 2 | Carve | Mike Smith | 15-1 |
| 3 | Vicar's in Trouble | John Velazquez | 12-1 |
| 4 | Pants on Fire | Paco Lopez | 6-1 |
| 5 | Handsome Mike | Mario Gutierrez | Scratched |
| 6 | Golden Ticket | Joel Rosario | 15-1 |
| 7 | Bronzo | Luis Torres | 12-1 |
| 8 | Fed Biz | Martin Garcia | 7-2 |
| 9 | Tapiture | Rosie Napravnik | 6-1 |
| 10 | Big Bane Theory | Joseph Talamo | 15-1 |
BreedersCup.com notes that Dirt Mile favorite Goldencents is the heaviest favorite of all 13 races at Santa Anita this weekend, and that's due in large part to how well the horse performed at last year's event. The colt won by 2 3/4 lengths.
Given the overwhelming 6-5 odds, it would be an absolute shock to see any other horse cross the finish line first. Pants on Fire, Tapiture or Fed Biz could feasibly challenge the colt, but the chances of Goldencents dropping the Dirt Mile are slim.
Juvenile Fillies Turf
| 1 | Partisan Politics | Javier Castellano | 15-1 |
| 2 | Osaila | Lanfranco Dettori | 5-1 |
| 3 | Sunset Glow | Victor Espinoza | 7-2 |
| 4 | Lady Eli | Irad Ortiz Jr. | 6-1 |
| 5 | Isabella Sings | John Velazquez | 12-1 |
| 6 | Sivoliere | Gary Stevens | 12-1 |
| 7 | Rainha Da Bateria | Joel Rosario | 12-1 |
| 8 | Nicky's Brown Miss | Francisco Torres | 20-1 |
| 9 | Lady Zuzu | Julien Leparoux | 15-1 |
| 10 | Quality Rocks | Jose Lezcano | 20-1 |
| 11 | Conquest Harlanate | Patrick Husbands | 10-1 |
| 12 | Tammy the Torpedo | Rafael Bejarano | 12-1 |
| 13 | Prize Exhibit | Jamie Spencer | 20-1 |
| 14 | Qualify | Ryan Moore | 5-1 |
| AE | Flying Tipat | Jose Ortiz | 20-1 |
| AE | War Alert | Jamie Spencer | 20-1 |
A 14-horse field makes for a ton of speculation and a whole lot of uncertainty leading into race day.
Qualify, Osaila, Lady Eli and Sunset Glow are some of the favorites, but it might be smart to take the field in this race.
Sivoliere is a filly to watch in this one, even if only because jockey Gary Stevens is competing in his first race since having knee replacement surgery.
Stevens is thankful to have the opportunity to ride again, per a press release: "Nothing can top the Breeders' Cup I had last year. But being able to go out there and ride at the highest level, for great people only 3 months after having a new knee put in, well it’s right up there."
A win would make it even better.
Longines Distaff
| 1 | L'Amour de Ma Vie | Maxime Guyon | 15-1 |
| 2 | Tiz Midnight | Victor Espinoza | 10-1 |
| 3 | Iotapa | Joseph Talamo | 6-1 |
| 4 | Belle Gallantey | Jose Ortiz | 6-1 |
| 5 | Unbridled Forever | John Velazquez | 20-1 |
| 6 | Stanwyck | Corey Nakatani | 20-1 |
| 7 | Don't Tell Sophia | Joseph Rocco Jr. | 5-1 |
| 8 | Valiant Emilia | Rafael Bejarano | 20-1 |
| 9 | Ria Antonia | Paco Lopez | 15-1 |
| 10 | Untapable | Rosie Napravnik | 5-2 |
| 11 | Close Hatches | Joel Rosario | 3-1 |
With a $2 million purse at stake, look for the best mares in the world to compete at a high level.
Bill Mott, an accomplished trainer in this race, is looking for Close Hatches to grab the purse.
Frank Angst of Bloodhorse, via ESPN.com, previewed the race for Mott and the filly:
"Mott, who has more Distaff wins than any other trainer, is looking for his sixth this year with Juddmonte Farms' Close Hatches. But to do so, he'll need the 4-year-old First Defence filly to bounce back from her only poor effort of the season. Close Hatches drew post 11 in a field of as many runners for the 1-1/8-mile Distaff and will have regular rider Joel Rosario in the irons.
"
Along with Close Hatches, Untapable is one of the favorites. The absence of Beholder, the defending champion, leaves the field relatively open, however.
The Longines Distaff, which is the biggest race of the weekend for fillies, won't be decided by more than two lengths.
