FC Dallas vs. Vancouver Whitecaps: 5 Things We Learned

Peter GalindoOct 29, 2014

FC Dallas advanced to the Western Conference semifinals after a 2-1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps at Toyota Park on Wednesday night, setting up a meeting with the Seattle Sounders in the next round.

Tesho Akindele opened the scoring and Erik Hurtado equalized in the second half, but with less than 10 minutes left, Kendall Waston conceded a penalty where he was adjudged to have committed a handball in the box. Michel converted from the spot to clinch the win for Dallas.

Here are five things that we learned from the Western Conference knockout round.

Dallas' Pressing Was Super Effective

1 of 5

The Whitecaps struggled to cope with Dallas’ pressing during the match. It’s what led to Andy O’Brien committing an uncharacteristic mistake that allowed Akindele to score.

The likes of Akindele and Blas Perez closed down Vancouver’s defenders all night. The Whitecaps could not get the ball out of their own third, which gave way to Waston conceding the winning penalty.

The Sounders have been lethal goalscorers this season, but if Dallas can replicate this pressing against Seattle, the Supporters' Shield winners will have a fierce challenge on their hands.

Pedro Morales Is Still Invisible on the Road

2 of 5

Pedro Morales was ineffective on the road once again. He was sloppy in possession, constantly gave away the ball and was moping around as if the match was already lost.

Once Morales exited the game, the Whitecaps’ attacking tempo changed. Kekuta Manneh entered, Mauro Rosales moved into a central role, and Vancouver managed to score the tying goal.

However, Morales' road form is still a worry for head coach Carl Robinson. A captain with low morale should not be that down on himself, especially in a playoff game.

Set Pieces Played a Vital Role

3 of 5

As predicted before the match, set pieces ended up playing a pivotal part in the contest. Rosales' free kick wasn't dealt with by Dallas' defense, so Hurtado pounced on the loose ball and scored thanks to a helpful deflection.

The manner in which the Hoops conceded the goal will annoy head coach Oscar Pareja. They will have to improve in that area heading into the first leg against Seattle.

Mauro Rosales Is the Whitecaps' True Unsung Hero

4 of 5

When the Vancouver Whitecaps acquired Mauro Rosales from Chivas USA, they knew they were getting a player who works hard and can unlock defenses.

Rosales only provided three assists prior to Wednesday's game, but it was the little things that makes him the true unsung hero of the Whitecaps' season.

Matias Laba has been exceptional for Robinson's side, which led to the midfielder winning the team's Unsung Hero award.

Rosales' efforts also deserve some praise, especially in the last match. Once the Argentinean moved into a central position, the game completely changed.

Kekuta Manneh Should Be Given More Starts Next Season

5 of 5

Kekuta Manneh's inclusion also changed the complexion of the game. His pace and quick shot can be a threat to any defense, which was on display on Wednesday.

Manneh has played in more games this year compared to last season. He participated in 29 regular-season matches, per MLSSoccer.com. On the other hand, the Gambian has made 17 appearances as a substitute, including the playoffs.

The youngster made a case for himself to start more, but whenever Robinson gave him the nod earlier in the campaign, he was less effective than when he came off the bench.

A positive sign is that Manneh had an increased role in the squad under the Welsh tactician. With another year of experience under his belt, the 19-year-old might earn more opportunities to start in 2015.
