Bangladesh V Zimbabwe: Winners and Losers from 1st Test

Jaideep VaidyaOct 29, 2014

Bangladesh edged a thrilling low-scoring first Test match against Zimbabwe at Mirpur inside three days to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

The match was dominated by the bowlers, with 254 being the highest innings total. Three bowlers took five or more wickets, while one scalped four.

In the end, the hosts scraped past a paltry target of 101 in what was an unconvincing win.

Both teams will be looking to make improvements before the second Test at Khulna on November 3.

These are the winners and losers of the first Test.

Winner: Shakib Al Hasan

1 of 6

Back in the Bangladesh side after a two-and-a-half-month suspension by the Bangladesh Cricket Board on disciplinary grounds, Shakib Al Hasan exploited the bounce and turn on offer at Mirpur on the first day to take six wickets.

Crowd favourite Shakib's six for 59 helped Bangladesh dismiss Zimbabwe for just 240 in the first innings and put the hosts in command.

Loser: Hamilton Masakadza

2 of 6

One of the mainstays of Zimbabwe's batting line-up, Hamilton Masakadza had a forgettable outing at Mirpur, scoring just 18 runs over two innings.

Masakadza's dismissal in the second innings, where he rather carelessly left alone an incoming delivery from Shahadat Hossain, summed up his match.

Winner: Tinashe Panyangara

3 of 6

A couple of months ago, Tinashe Panyangara was fined and expelled from Zimbabwe's squad for the tri-series involving Australia and South Africa, for allegedly sharing a video of one of Mitchell Johnson's spells with his teammates.

Panyangara was back at his disruptive best at Mirpur, but this time Zimbabwe had no problem whatsoever with it.

The fast bowler took his first ever five-wicket haul, which brought his team back into the game after being bowled out for a low total.

Loser: Tamim Iqbal

4 of 6

One of Bangladesh's most experienced and prolific batsmen, Tamim Iqbal had clearly gotten up on the wrong side of the bed as he managed just 5 and 0 in the match.

Iqbal now has the dubious distinction of being the lowest-scoring batsman in the series so far, a record he will be eager to erase in the upcoming games.

Winner: Taijul Islam

5 of 6

An unlikely hero, Taijul Islam recorded the best ever bowling figures in Bangladesh's history, eight for 39, as he polished the Zimbabweans off for just 114 in the second innings.

To add a cherry on the cake, he was also the one who hit the winning boundary for his team after coming in to bat at No. 9, in what was a nervy finish.

Loser: Shamsur Rahman

6 of 6

Another Bangladeshi batsman of whom much was expected, Shamsur Rahman could score just eight runs over two innings.
