World Series 2014: Schedule and Predictions for Giants vs. Royals Game 6

Sean ODonnellOct 28, 2014

After the San Francisco Giants dismantled the Kansas City Royals in back-to-back games, Bruce Bochy's crew has a stranglehold on the 2014 World Series. The Royals are now on the brink of a runner-up finish; however, if there's one thing we learned about this club, it's that they are a resilient bunch.

While the Giants have the clear upper hand with a 3-2 series lead, the final two contests move back to Kansas City and feature pitching matchups that favored the Royals the first time around. Will San Francisco continue to surge in Game 6 and clinch a championship, or will the Royals show new signs of life and force a Game 7?

Game 6 Preview and Prediction

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - OCTOBER 26: Pablo Sandoval #48 of the San Francisco Giants reacts after grounding out to second base against the Kansas City Royals during Game Five of the 2014 World Series at AT&T Park on October 26, 2014 in San Francisco, Californi

Jake Peavy and Yordano Ventura are set to make their second starts of the series for the Giants and Royals, respectively. The last time these two pitchers faced off, a meltdown by Peavy in the sixth inning led to a 7-2 Royals victory. However, Ventura didn't last much longer, going 5.1 innings.

Peavy was efficient through five innings in Game 2. He did allow two early runs, but he shook it off and followed with three consecutive scoreless innings. He was blasted in the sixth inning, but that isn't a new trend for the veteran in the postseason, according to SportsCenter:

Perhaps San Francisco learned a valuable lesson and will call upon its bullpen before it gets to that point this time around. After all, with relievers such as Jeremy Affeldt, Sergio Romo and Santiago Casilla in the fold, the team's starter doesn't need to go the distance.

We'll have to pay keen attention to the Royals bats in Game 6. This is a streaky hitting team, and it hasn't generated a run in 15 innings. One false move by a Giants pitcher could quickly awaken a sleeping beast.

Ventura and his 100 mph fastball got off to a rocky start in Game 2, as Gregor Blanco went yard in the contest's first at-bat. The rookie did manage to compose himself and got through 5.1 innings, only allowing one more run.

San Francisco did hit Ventura eight times in that game but struggled to connect with runners in scoring position. Considering the Giants' current hot bats, allowing that kind of contact again could prove to be a death sentence for this team.

Sports Illustrated described the situation the young pitcher finds himself in:

Like Peavy, Ventura must get through five innings relatively unscathed. From there, the team's bullpen will be called into action once again. Rest assured, Kelvin Herrera and Wade Davis will be pitching with chips on their shoulders after underwhelming Game 5 performances.

Expect the return to Kansas City to play a huge role in this impending contest. When the Royals are winning, they seem to have a confidence and a swagger about them. We haven't seen that over the last couple of games, and a boisterous home crowd could be just what the doctor ordered.

Kansas City gets its bats going against Peavy early in this one, and the team's bullpen cleans up a decisive win and forces a Game 7.

Prediction: Royals 6, Giants 3
