Staind Lead Singer Bungles National Anthem at Game 5 of the World Series

Dan CarsonOct 27, 2014

Aaron Lewis is probably one of the biggest patriots to royally botch a national anthem.

The lead singer of the metal band Staind stepped up to the mic Sunday to lead the World Series crowd at AT&T Park in a rousing rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner.”

BroBible’s Jorge Alonso spotted video of Lewis’ rendition, which included a fine fudging of the anthem’s second line.

“What so proudly we hailed, were so gallantly streaming,” Lewis sang, mixing up the second and fourth line of the tune.

Francis Scott Key would not appreciate Lewis’ glossing over the twilight or its “last gleaming.” It’s an important segment of the song and a transformative time of the afternoon. You don’t go from light to dark without some “twi” in the middle.

Lewis’ botch job was an ironic misstep for someone who once dismissed singer Christina Aguilera for similarly muffing the national anthem.

Warning: Video contains NSFW language.

I’m not a lawyer, but I believe there are legal statutes against messing up the national anthem after the words “Don’t Tread On Me” have been scraped into your neck.

Lewis apologized to the nation via Facebook after the game, blaming the mishap on nerves:

"

All I can say is I'm sorry and ask for the Nation's forgiveness. My nerves got the best of me and I am completely torn up about what happened. America is the greatest country in the world. The Star-Spangled Banner means so much to so many, including myself. I hope everyone can understand the intensity of the situation and my true intent of this performance. I hope that the Nation, Major League Baseball and the many fans of our national pastime can forgive me.

"

For what it’s worth, Lewis finished strong once he put the lyrics together. The crowd cheered the singer on, as no one wants a national anthem to fail.

Lewis ended the tune to wild applause, Madison Bumgarner immolated Kansas City and democracy somehow—despite the best attempts of ‘90s metal footnotes—survived the night.

The state of the union is strong, everyone.
