5 Magical David Warner Moments
David Warner celebrates his 28th birthday on Monday, and it gives us an opportunity to look back at some of the most impressive moments from what has been a stellar, if sometimes controversial, career.
The New South Welshman has been a spectacularly entertaining batsman in all forms of the game, scoring his runs at a considerable lick.
Featuring outrageous shots, T20 fireworks, ODI spectaculars and a Test match masterclass, here are five of Warner's most magical moments.
89 from 43 Balls on International Debut
1 of 5Warner marked his arrival on the international scene in spectacular style. Despite never having played a first-class game, Warner was selected for the Australian T20 side that took on South Africa in 2009.
In front of a massive Melbourne Cricket Ground crowd, Warner put on a masterclass of destructive hitting.
The left-hander manhandled an attack that included Dale Steyn, Jacques Kallis and Makhaya Ntini, smashing six sixes and seven fours.
After 43 balls of carnage, Warner had 89 runs to his name and an international career was born.
T20 Switch-Hit for 6
2 of 5Warner is known for his outlandish stroke play, but what he served up in a 2012 T20 against India was outrageous even by his own standards.
Ravichandran Ashwin was on the receiving end of arguably the greatest switch-hit ever played. Firing one in on the leg stump, the Indian spinner could only look on in disbelief as Warner switched grip and stance and smashed the ball straight over long-off for a huge six.
Per The Northern Star, measurement reportedly revealed that the ball traveled 100 metres!
Kevin Pietersen famously reverse-swept Muttiah Muralitharan for six, but even KP must have been impressed with the perfect timing and supreme power shown from the Australian opener.
69-Ball Test Century Against India
3 of 5As a Test average of 47.80 and nine centuries suggests, Warner is far more than just a limited-overs slogger.
At his best, the New South Welshman can be as destructive in the five-day game as he is in T20s.
India were on the receiving end of one such blast in 2011.
Warner smashed 13 fours and three sixes en route to a 69-ball century. It was the second fastest Test century by an Australian, tied for the fourth fastest of all time and was the quickest by a Test opener.
135 from 65 Balls in the IPL
4 of 5Warner's big-hitting style is suited to the T20 game, and he's proved a big hit in the IPL.
His most memorable effort in the shortest form of the game came against IPL opposition in the 2011 Champions League.
Opening the batting for New South Wales against Chennai Super Kings, Warner smashed 135 from just 65 balls. The spectacular knock included 11 fours and eight sixes and helped the Australian side to a comfortable 46-run victory.
Pair of Centuries in the Same Test Against South Africa
5 of 5Warner enhanced his credentials as one of the best batsmen in the world with a spectacular series against the top-ranked South Africans in 2014.
In six innings, the left-hander scored 543 runs at an average of 90.40 and saved his best for when it really counted.
With the series tied at one apiece, Warner delivered a batting masterclass in the decider at Newlands.
Facing an attack that included Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander, Warner smashed 135 from 152 balls in the first innings.
Not content with that, he added a further 145 from 156 balls in the second.
Warner's heroics helped secure a surprise series win for the visiting Australians.
