Game 4 Pitching Preview

Ryan Vogelsong is set to take the mound for the Giants in Game 4. He had quite a reputation of being a clutch postseason pitcher up until his last outing against the St. Louis Cardinals in which he recorded a bewildering 12.00 ERA.
ESPN Stats & Info summed up the change in the pitcher's effectiveness with this tweet:
San Francisco was able to salvage that win due to some clutch hitting and a great effort from reliever Yusmeiro Petit. However, with just four hits in Game 3, it's easy to question the reliability of the Giants bats right now.
Jason Vargas gets the start for the Royals on Saturday. He's been very effective so far in the postseason, pitching a total of 11.1 innings while allowing five hits and three runs en route to a 1-0 record and 2.38 ERA. However, the one big concern about Vargas is his vulnerability against big hitters.
Through his two postseason starts, Vargas gave up a total of three home runs. This wasn't exactly a new trend for the pitcher, as he also gave up 19 during the regular season, including four in his final four starts.
Here's a side-by-side comparison of each pitcher's postseason stats so far, courtesy of Fox Sports MLB:
Judging by both Vogelsong's and Vargas' recent starts, it's easy to speculate neither will last more than a good five or six innings in Game 4. This will leave plenty of work for these teams' talented bullpens.
Kansas City relievers Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland have been superb in the postseason. The three combined for 3.1 scoreless innings once again Friday, and they have combined to allow just three total runs in 32.2 innings of work in the playoffs.
Here's a look at what the Royals bullpen did on Friday, via MLB:
San Francisco's Sergio Romo, Jeremy Affeldt and Santiago Casilla proved they are a formidable trio once again in Game 3. They only allowed one hit over a total of three innings on the mound. The three relievers have combined to allow just one run in 21.2 postseason innings.
With these bullpens continuing dominant showings, Game 4 may come down to which starter blinks first. Will Vargas give up the long ball once again? Will Vogelsong falter due to a lack of confidence from his previous postseason outing?
This is what makes the World Series one of the most exciting and captivating sporting events each and every year. Hang on to your hats; it's going to be a wild ride the rest of the way.
