Overview
South Africa completed a clinical chase against a slightly rusty and injury-hit New Zealand team in the first ODI in Mount Mauganui. Since then, it has been confirmed that Kane Williamson will miss the ODI series through injury and, with Ross Taylor already out, the Black Caps will need something special to get over the line.
Now that the Proteas have had a first-hand look at the conditions at the venue, things might get even tougher for the hosts. Luke Ronchi and Trent Boult were the only two New Zealand players to really give the South Africans a hard time, both with bat and ball.
There is some good news for New Zealand with news that Tim Southee is now completely fit after sitting out of the first match with a shoulder injury. Kyle Mills is the most likely of the bowlers to miss out.
South Africa, though, are not completely out of the woods yet. Their death bowling still remains a concern, even with players like Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander in the team. Still, it’s more fine-tuning that going back to the drawing board for the visitors and they also need to fine-tune just one batting position. Rilee Rossouw played in the first game with David Miller sitting out due to a viral infection. Miller is more of a lower-order hard hitter and South Africa are still toying with which combination works best for them.
A win on Friday will seal the series and give South Africa a little bit more room to experiment in the final ODI, if they wished to do so.
Key players
New Zealand
Captain Brendon McCullum showed glimpsed of the hard-hitting destruction he is capable of, but against such a potent bowling attack, he met his match. Playing it cool and building an innings can go a long way in the ODI format and McCullum needs to lead from the front to do just that.
South Africa
Vernon Philander was excellent with the new ball, but struggled a bit with the old ball later on in the innings. AB de Villiers needs to use him well in order to get the best out of him. New Zealand conditions are perfect for Philander and he'll be hoping for more swing assistance in this match.
