Virginia Basketball Recruiting: Make-or-Break Players for 2015 Class
The 2016 season is shaping to be a banner year for the Virginia Cavaliers on the recruiting trail. Just this week, the Hoos landed a big commitment when Kyle Guy, a 6'2" sharpshooting point guard from Indiana, per ESPN, pledged to Virginia.
But what about 2015?
This year's squad has just one scholarship senior, Darion Atkins, and he will likely come off the bench. So there aren't many openings for newcomers in 2015.
The Cavaliers currently have one commitment: Jarred Reuter, a 6'8", 235-pound power forward from New Hampshire.
Virginia will be loaded with perimeter players the next season. Malcolm Brogdon, London Perrantes, Justin Anderson, B.J. Stith, Devon Hall and Marial Shayok all have at least two years of eligibility remaining. So adding perimeter players in this recruiting class is not a high priority.
Center Mike Tobey is a junior, and his backup, freshman Jack Salt, is a freshman. The Hoos would prefer to add another big man to the 2015 class.
Here are three players who could make or break Virginia's 2015 recruiting class.
Marcus Derrickson
1 of 3
Marcus Derrickson is a 6'7", 225-pound forward from Fairfax, Virginia. The only problem is he's currently a Georgetown commitment.
Derrickson, who transferred from Paul VI in Fairfax to the Brewster Academy in New Hampshire this summer, fits the profile Tony Bennett looks for in his forwards.
Derrickson can rebound, defend multiple positions and score. According to The Washington Post's Brandon Parker, "he is still firm in his commitment to the Hoyas," but could another disappointing season make him want to look elsewhere?
Luke Maye
2 of 3
Luke Maye, a 6'7", 225-pound forward from Cornelius, North Carolina, is a versatile player who can fit in any system.
Maye is an excellent shooter who can handle the ball and is a very good passer. He could play either forward spot at the next level.
Maye, a former football player, has drawn interest from several ACC schools, including North Carolina.
Virginia remains firmly in the mix for Maye, and he would be an outstanding addition for Bennett in the class of 2015.
Isaiah Briscoe
3 of 3Virginia may not be looking for guards in 2015, but if a player like Isaiah Briscoe wants to come to Charlottesville, Bennett will make it happen.
The Cavs have recruited the New Jersey native, although it appears to be a race among St. John's, Arizona and Kentucky for the 5-star guard.
Briscoe is a future NBA lottery pick and a program-changing talent. Unfortunately for Virginia, he looks like a one-and-done type of player, something Bennett abhors.
Briscoe is not likely coming to Virginia, but another strong season may change his mind.
