Bayern Munich's 7-1 win in Rome was dominant, free-flowing attacking football at its finest. The hosts were completely overrun from the very first minute, and the Giallorossi must have felt like the Brazilian team during their 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Germany for most of the first half.
BBC Sport's Ben Smith was also in awe:
It took the Bavarians just 36 minutes to take a 5-0 lead, Arjen Robben finding the net twice. The onslaught was complete and came on every level of the pitch. Roma could hardly keep possession and hardly crossed into German territory, and when they did, they ran into swift counters.
Bayern hadn't looked great in this year's Champions League up until this point, but they sent a strong message Tuesday: Overlook the 2012-13 champions at your own risk.
Incredibly, the German champions' performance was overshadowed by an even more impressive scoring show. Shakhtar Donetsk's Adriano became only the second player in Champions League to score five goals in a single match in his team's 7-0 win over BATE Borisov.
OptaFranz shared the milestone:
Manchester City's European struggles continued Tuesday, giving up a two-goal lead to draw CSKA Moscow in Russia. Sergio Aguero and James Milner had given the British champions a deserved lead, but Seydou Doumbia and Bebras Natcho salvaged a point for the hosts in the second half.
Manuel Pellegrini was in no mood to hide his disappointment, via the Mirror's David McDonnell:
Schalke and Sporting Lisbon appeared destined to play out a 3-3 draw in Germany, before referee Karasev controversially pointed to the spot in the final minutes for a perceived handball. BeIN Sports' Tancredi Palmeri was particularly critical of the assistant referee who made the call:
Arsenal escaped from Belgium with a 2-1 win over Anderlecht on Wednesday, after the Belgian side had dominated most of the second half. Calum Chambers found Kieran Gibbs with a perfect cross in the 89th minute, and substitute Lukas Podolski shocked the home fans by producing a winner one minute later.
Liverpool didn't have such luck hosting Real Madrid, as the deadly duo of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema were once again on target. As shared by OptaJoe, Ronaldo became just the second player to score 70 Champions League goals:
The Ballon d'Or holder found himself on the end of a beautiful pass from James Rodriguez and blasted a shot past Simon Mignolet, before Benzema made it 2-0 with a perfect header.
Benzema doubled his tally before half-time, after some truly dreadful defending from the Reds and a very poor angle taken by Mignolet.
Atletico Madrid thrashed Malmo, 5-0, while Juventus continued their bad habit of struggling in the Champions League with a shock 1-0 loss against Olympiakos.
Ludogorets' upset win over Basel means the Bulgarian side sit second in Group B at the midway point of the group stages, beating Liverpool on goal difference. The Reds will need a strong performance at the Bernabeu and in Bulgaria to avoid dropping to the Europa League when all is said and done.
