Indian Super League 2014 Results: Updated Table, Scores and Fixtures for Week 2

Rory MarsdenOct 21, 2014

The inaugural Indian Super League season is into its second week with the table set to take on a more representative shape by Sunday.

Teams such as Atletico de Kolkata and NorthEast United were able to get three matches under their belts in the opening days of the competition and thus, unsurprisingly, sit at the top of the standings after these early season exchanges.

Atletico remain the team to watch at present, too, winning three of their first four games to maintain an unbeaten run at the head of the queue.

Equally, Kerala Blasters—who have lost both matches so far—also have the opportunity to get some points on the board and move off the bottom of the pile.

Read on for the updated standings, daily scores and upcoming fixtures for Week 2's action in India.

Oct. 26: Kerala Blasters Hold Atletico De Kolkata, Pune City Record First Win

2 of 6

Atletico de Kolkata 1-1 Kerala Blasters

FC Pune City 2-0 FC Goa

Ex-England goalkeeper David James was all smiles as Kerala Blasters picked up their first point of the 2014 Indian Super League season with a 1-1 draw at Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday.

Hosts Atletico de Kolkata went 1-0 up in the first half after Baljit Sahni capitalised on a superb run down the left wing from Jofre, but the visitors would persevere to peg back the league leaders.

Having lost their first two games of the season, Trevor Morgan will have been pleasantly encouraged by the reaction his side gave to going a goal down as they fought their way back into the fixture.

That pressure came to a head with Iain Hume's composed finish four minutes from half-time, the former Leicester City man beating Subhasish Roy Chowdhury from short range to draw level.

That was the end of the scoring, but each team showed conviction in chasing the lead over the final 45 minutes, although there was to be no separating the pair.

Atletico wil be disappointed at losing their lead, but as the official Indian Super League Twitter account points out, they can take some comfort in having yet to suffer defeat:

"

A draw would be Kerala's first points in the league and would also mean that @atletidekolkata remain unbeaten. #ATKvKER

— Indian Super League (@IndSuperLeague) October 26, 2014"

It was a far more clear-cut result at Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex Stadium, where FC Pune City won their first game of the campaign in what was also their home debut.

Veterans Kostas Katsouranis and David Trezeguet showed their class over the FC Goa defence to strike either side of the half-time interval, despite seeing a minority of possession, per the official Indian Super League website.

Goal.com India bemoaned the Goans' defence in allowing Trezeguet to increase the home side's lead:

"

GOAL GOAL GOAL! #Trezeguet SCORES! Terrible mistake from Arnolin there! He had so much time there http://t.co/pKVLhZfR5C #ISL #Letsfootball

— Goal India (@Goal_India) October 26, 2014"

The win move Pune City away from the foot of the table and into fifth spot, while Goa now sit at the bottom of the pile and remain in search of their first league win.

Oct. 25: Delhi Dynamos Thrash Chennaiyin, Pick Up First Win

3 of 6

Delhi Dynamos FC scored early and dominated Chennaiyin FC to win 4-1, picking up their first three-pointer of the season and elbowing their way into the top four in the process.

The hosts took a blistering start to the match, as Belgium's Wim Raymaekers scoring a stunning goal inside the first minute.

Alessandro Del Piero took a short corner and the ball was played to the defender on the edge of the box, curling it into the top corner with both power and accuracy. Indian Football home shared footage of the beauty, which you can watch here.

The league's official Twitter feed confirmed it was the fastest goal in ISL history:

"

Raymaekers' opener is also the fastest goal in the #HeroISL so far, coming inside the first minute! #DELvCHE

— Indian Super League (@IndSuperLeague) October 25, 2014"

Chennaiyin almost had an equaliser just minutes later, as Elano found himself through on goal. Kristof van Hout did well to parry his effort, however.

The New Delhi crowd went wild as the action was fast and furious, Harmanjot Khabra's strike just missing Van Hout's goal. Steven Dias isolated Mads Junker out wide, but his nifty pass back for Del Piero just skipped past the experienced Italian.

Balwant Singh also failed to find the target from close range, before Junker doubled the hosts' lead with a powerful header that was really the product of a sensational cross from Dias.

Raymaekers continued his strong play on the defensive end but was powerless to stop Singh from controlling the ball on his chest, before allowing it to skip out of bounds.

The visitors made some changes at half-time and built some early momentum, but it took until late in the second half for Chennaiyin to pull one back through Elano. Taking a free kick from 25 yeards out, the specialist gave the giant Van Hout no chance.

The goal brought life back into the match, but eventually the hosts would seal the win with a third, Bruno Arias calmly converting a penalty. The goal completely broke all resistance, allowing Gustavo Dos Santos to put the final score of 4-1 on the board.

Raymakers and Dias deserved all the credit for the win, putting together perhaps the finest performances the young ISL season has seen so far.

Oct. 24: NorthEast United Pick Up First Away Win

4 of 6

Northeast United surged in the second half to get past hosts Mumbai City FC 2-0, picking up their first away win and the second spot in the standings in the process.

Kondwani Mtonga and Felipe De Castro scored for the visitors, taking advantage of the spaces that came available late as Mumbai ended the match with nine men.

Both teams exchanged chances in the first half, Andre Moritz missing the target by inches with a long-range effort before Nadong Bhutia nearly found a teammate at the edge of the box with a nifty pass.

The Highlanders were forced into an early substitution as Isaac Chansa couldn't continue following a rash challenge, making way for Felipe. Mumbai now started taking control of possession, but NorthEast United remained dangerous on the counter, the substitute nearly finding the target after 30 minutes.

Koke remained the driving force behind the visitors, continuing his excellent form in the tournament. His excellent cross found Felipe, who placed his header just over the bar. Moritz did all the play-making for Mumbai City, his long-range shots troubling T.P. Rehenesh on more than one occasion.

Fredrik Ljungberg made his way onto the pitch at the start of the second half, as the home side trusted its star-power to make the difference. Instead, it were Highlanders taking the lead, Koke finding space for Mtonga who produced a brilliant chip.

Mumbai immediately made their final substitution and pushed hard for an equaliser, only to watch Ljungberg forced to leave the pitch with an injury one minute later. The hosts were now reduced to 10 men, and things got even worse when Pavel Cmovs picked up his second yellow card.

Playing just nine men, NorthEast United put men behind the ball and aimed for the counter-attack, finding success in injury time through Felipe.

Scorer Mtonga was ecstatic with the win, via the club's official Twitter feed:

"

Mtonga - "We didn't win it alone, we won it as a team" We are the 8, We are United! #HeroISL #MUMvNEU #TheHighlanders

— NorthEast United FC (@NEUtdFC) October 24, 2014"

The win sees the visitors climb to second place in the ISL standings, just three points behind league-leaders Atletico de Kolkata. Mumbai City FC are still within the play-off spots, and with a long season still ahead, the club still looks like a strong bet to make it to the knockout stages.

Oct. 23: Atletico Kolkata Extend Lead with Win over Goa

5 of 6

FC Goa 1-2 Atletico Kolkata

Atletico Kolkata kept up an unbeaten start to the Indian Super League season with a 2-1 win over FC Goa on Thursday, with Cavin Lobo becoming the first Indian player to score a brace in the recently constructed division.

He netted twice in 12 minutes to extend Atletico's lead at the table's summit to four points, albeit having played at least one more fixture than the rest of the league.

It was a welcome return to winning ways for Atletico, who drew at home to Delhi Dynamos on Sunday and risked putting their top-of-the-table status at threat had they failed to secure victory.

According to the official Indian Super League website, the visitors were level with Goa in the possession stakes and saw only five shots on target.

However, Goa grew complacent following the opener from former Arsenal and Gremio left-back Andre Santos in the 21st minute, allowing their opponent to weave their way back into the tie.

Cavin struck from the edge of the box in the 72nd minute before sending in a volley with just six minutes remaining at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

This wasn't necessarily an example of the stylish Atletico fans have seen at times over the past fortnight, but an ability to win through messy means is also the hallmark of a side contending for title honours.

There won't be much rest for the Super League leaders, either, with Kerala Blasters travelling to Salt Lake Stadium in just three days time, hoping to end Atletico's four-match unbeaten run on Sunday.

Goa, meanwhile, prepare for a trip to FC Pune City on Sunday, where they can hope to clinch their first win of the campaign against another team still seeking their first three-point haul.

Oct. 21: Chennaiyin Defeat Kerala to Go 2nd

6 of 6

Chennaiyin FC 2-1 Kerala Blasters

Bernard Mendy's stunning overhead-kick winner sealed all three points for Chennaiyin FC as they beat Kerala Blasters 2-1 at home on Tuesday in the South Indian derby.

It was only the second game of the Indian Super League for both sides, Chennaiyin having won their opener away to Goa while Kerala lost to NorthEast United.

The result from the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium moves the hosts into second place in the standings while the Blasters still sit rock bottom with zero points.

The tone for an eventful game was set in the very first minute as Balwant Singh headed just wide to give the hosts great confidence from the off.

However, Kerala played themselves into the game well before Gurwinder Singh fouled Abhishek Das in the penalty area to hand Elano the perfect opportunity to put the home side ahead from the spot in the 14th minute.

The Brazilian made no mistake to make it 1-0 to Chennaiyin and take his tally to two goals in two after his strike in the opener.

Chennaiyin took their lead into the break, but Kerala drew level just five minutes into the second half when Iain Hume smashed Nirmal Chettri's knockdown into the roof of the net.

David James' side took great heart from their equaliser but could not find the winner when the momentum was with them and Mendy's goal just after the hour came as a hammer blow.

The Frenchman acrobatically got on the end of an Elano free-kick and reestablished his side's lead with a venomous shot that turned out to be the winner.

However, Chennaiyin had to hold off waves of Kerala attacks in the dying minutes but did just enough to hold on for the win and move up to second in the table.

Wednesday sees current table-toppers Atletico de Kolkata travel to Goa, and if the away side fail to win, Chennaiyin could move top of the league with a victory against Delhi Dynamos on Saturday.
