Masipa began by explaining the keys to her decision, per Sky News' Alex Crawford:
Masipa summarised the defence team's arguments, reminding the court of its recommendation for house arrest and community service.
Pistorius attempted to keep cool during the process, as noted by Crawford:
Masipa next turned to the prosecution's arguments, noting the pain caused to the Steenkamp family and the guarantee that prison would be able house Pistorius, per Bateman:
Masipa revealed the first blow to the defence team, saying she was not impressed with Annette Vergeer, who provided outdated evidence regarding the state of South African prisons.
The Judge insisted prison was fit for Pistorius:
Pillar two of the defence's mitigating factors was then knocked down as Masipa ruled Pistorius would receive the required medical treatment if sent to jail.
She noted that Pistorius is a world-class athlete and that pregnant women have to cope with jail:
Masipa also dealt a blow to Pistorius' celebrity factor, per Bateman:
Turning to the night Pistorius killed Steenkamp, Masipa highlighted that the accused knew there was nowhere to escape from behind the toilet door. She also pointed out Pistorius was a trained gunman:
Masipa accepted the mitigating factors that Pistorius is a first-time offender and has shown great remorse. She also accepted the defence's claim that negative media reports can affect an individual's reputation.
She insisted society's thirst for a harsh sentence should not be a factor:
Masipa began to narrow her focus to the most pressing factor: the degree of culpability. She used previous cases of a similar nature to aid her decision in what appeared a blow to the State:

Masipa began to list differences between the Pistorius case and other similar cases. She noted that he knew somebody was behind the door, and that he fired four shots—not one.
The Judge concluded the defence's suggested punishment of three years' house arrest would not be appropriate:
Masipa next ruled out a suspended sentence, based on the fact the perceived "intruder" (Steenkamp) never opened the door to pose a serious threat to Pistorius:
Masipa revealed a non-custodial sentence would not deter the public from copycat killings, but insisted a lengthy sentence would also not be appropriate, per Sky News' Paul Kelso:
