Race Review
The early stages of the race pointed toward a potential repeat champion. David Berdan, who won last year's marathon in two hours, 30 minutes and five seconds, was able to set a terrific pace during opening miles of his defense.
WBAL-TV passed along an aerial shot of him in the lead just about 20 minutes in:
Unfortunately for Berdan, he wasn't able to completely overcome a hip injury suffered while training. The lead he had built faded away and he was eventually caught by Rosenberg. Alexander Pyles of the Baltimore Sun notes that the ailment forced him to withdraw after 13 miles.
WBAL-TV highlighted the lead change:
Rosenberg never looked back from there. His final pace ended up being 15 seconds per mile quicker than any other competitor. The time was also nearly seven minutes quicker than last year, when he finished third.
The Baltimore Sun report also included comments from the winner following the race.
"Winning is great, running a personal best is great," Rosenberg said. "Really, just finishing is great."
Christopher Bain, Jacob Gilden, Stephen Olenick and Christopher Beck all broke the 2:45 mark to make up the top five.
On the women's side, it was a similar result. Alex Wang was unchallenged over the final miles as she cruised to a triumph of nearly seven minutes over her closest competition.
The event's official Twitter account provided word of the accomplishment:
Silvia Baage, who finished third last year, moved up one spot to second and improved her final time by five seconds. Jackie D'Antonio, Margaret Smith and Adrienne Choi rounded out the top five in a race that was more competitive outside the top two.
Above all else, Nestor Aparicio of WNST opines that the event as a whole brings a unique feeling to the city:
A proud day for Baltimore and time to celebrate for Brian Rosenberg and Alex Wang.
