Paul Scholes Hails Arsenal's Jack Wilshere as England's Best Player

Sean SwabyOct 15, 2014

Either Paul Scholes has felt a huge change of heart on Jack Wilshere or the Arsenal and England midfielder has finally won over the former Manchester United star.

Scholes, as recently as last March, had said that Wilshere hadn't progressed at all since crashing on the scene as a 17-year-old and being hailed in the process (via Goal.com).

He's since backtracked after being impressed by Wilshere's performances in the centre of the park for the Three Lions and even hailed Wilshere as the best player in the current England setup.

The 22-year-old has enjoyed a good run of form for both club and country, as he's avoided any major injury for the first time in recent memory.

In his column for The Independent (h/t Telegraph), Scholes wrote:

"

I thought Jack Wilshere had two very good games for England over last week. I would go one step further than that and say that at the moment he is England's best player.

I think the penny has dropped and he has added another dimension to his game. He has always been capable of intricate passing. Now he can play the ball long, too. The quality of some of those passes into Wayne Rooney in Estonia was high.

You cannot underestimate the importance of eye contact between a midfielder and a striker in those situations. Wilshere mentioned it in one of the interviews that he gave and I would agree that it is critical.

With the great forwards I played with it was often the case that you did not need a call or a signal. Often it was just a look and it was enough to know where they were going. Wilshere and Rooney seemed to have that.
