MLB Playoffs 2014: TV Schedule, Live Stream, Bracket Predictions for Day 12

Rob GoldbergOct 15, 2014

While Tuesday's results made a big impact in each series, the MLB playoffs still continue with four teams all fighting for a spot in the World Series.

The Baltimore Orioles will try to keep up with the Kansas City Royals in the American League Championship Series in Wednesday's first game. In the night game, the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals will continue to jockey for position in the National League Championship Series.

Although the odds are not in the favor of the two trailing teams, anything can happen from here on out. Nothing is final in baseball until the last out is recorded.

Here is a look at what to expect for Day 12 of the baseball postseason.

Orioles at Royals

BALTIMORE, MD - OCTOBER 11: Nelson Cruz #23 of the Baltimore Orioles gets tagged out by Alcides Escobar #2 of the Kansas City Royals during Game Two of the American League Championship Series at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on October 11, 2014 in Baltimor

The most important thing in Game 4 will be the mindset of the two teams. The Orioles knew they were in trouble after losing the first two games at home, but manager Buck Showalter displayed his confidence heading into Game 3, per Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com:

"

I've got 96 reasons to be confident in our guys. Once again, that's why it's so fascinating. You've got these two teams, four teams meeting this time of year, and you can create a lot of positive feelings about it, because you've been through so many battles with them. You've seen them respond so many times.

"

The 96 referred to the team's win total, which trailed just the Los Angeles Angels for the most in baseball. If he had these feelings going into Tuesday and the rest of the team believed it, there is no reason to back down going into Game 4.

Based on talent alone, the Orioles pose a tough test for the Royals going forward. They have a deep lineup full of hitters who can hit home runs and a shutdown bullpen that can leave room for a comeback at any time. The question is whether this group can play to its ability on a more consistent basis.

On the other hand, the Royals have been almost unstoppable in the postseason. Even when things go poorly, they find ways to bounce back with great performances at the plate, on the mound and in the field.

Mike Moustakas has been a poster boy of the recent success after struggling for much of the season. Now teams seem to not be able to get him out, and his approach indicates he is not done, as Jon Morosi of Fox Sports 1 noted during Game 2:

Moustakas is just one example of everyone stepping up in the playoffs. The players compete with an energy that feeds off each other and that seems to only get better at home. Look for the Royals to earn yet another win in front of the rowdy Kansas City crowd in Game 4.

Prediction: Royals 6, Orioles 3

Cardinals at Giants

ST LOUIS, MO - OCTOBER 12: Kolten Wong #16 of the St. Louis Cardinals celebrates his solo home run in the ninth inning to give the St. Louis Cardinals the 5 to 4 win over the San Francisco Giants with teammates during Game Two of the National League Cham

Where: AT&T Park, San Francisco, California

Both teams will show off their depth in the rotation by throwing out their fourth starters in Game 4. While many teams start to panic and use their aces on short rest, the managers in this series went another way, and fans will instead see a battle between Shelby Miller and Ryan Vogelsong.

Miller had a solid outing in his only playoff start against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but he could get in trouble if he gets too comfortable with his fastball. Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports broke down the beginning of his last start:

As long as he can keep hitters off balance a little bit, Miller should be fine. Interestingly, he best compares to his teammate, according to ESPN's Buster Olney:

Considering Lance Lynn was able to pitch 5.2 innings with just two runs allowed against the Giants in Game 2, Miller should be able to do enough to get by.

Meanwhile, Vogelsong has found a way to step up his game in the playoffs throughout his career, as noted by this stat courtesy of Alex Pavlovic of the San Jose Mercury News:

He allowed just one run in 5.2 innings against the Washington Nationals and simply knows what it takes to keep runs off the board. Neither of these pitchers are likely to go deep into the game, but it would be surprising to see either give up too many runs.

This is where it comes down to timely hitting, which has eluded both teams throughout the playoffs. However, the Cardinals might be without their most clutch hitter, Yadier Molina, who is dealing with a strained oblique.

With the Giants having a strong middle of the order between Hunter Pence, Buster Posey and Pablo Sandoval, the big hits should come, and San Francisco will come away with an important home win.

Prediction: Giants 4, Cardinals 1
