49ers vs. Rams: Live Score and Analysis for San Francisco
The San Francisco 49ers are prepared to square off for a prime-time matchup with the division rival St. Louis Rams on Monday Night Football.
St. Louis came into this Week 6 matchup with a 1-3 record. Two heartbreaking back-to-back losses set head coach Jeff Fisher's squad back against a 49ers team that upended the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs in the previous two weeks, respectively.
But the 49ers had their hands full early containing the Rams' offensive threats, including quarterback Austin Davis, wide receiver Brian Quick and running back Zac Stacy.
The first half did not yield the results hoped for from San Francisco's vantage point.
It was St. Louis that got on the scoreboard first. After an impressive opening drive that lasted just over seven minutes, Benny Cunningham punched the ball into the end zone, giving the Rams an early lead.
Following a Vance McDonald fumble, the Rams marched down the field again. Tight end Lance Kendricks hauled in a 22-yard touchdown pass from Davis late in the first quarter.
San Francisco was able to find the scoreboard with a 54-yard Phil Dawon field goal midway through the second quarter.
In spite of the first-half 49ers woes, the offense finally was able to generate some impressive production with seconds remaining before halftime. Kaepernick found veteran receiver Brandon Lloyd for an 81-yard touchdown pass with just 15 seconds remaining.
The 49ers started off on the right foot in the second half. A long drive ended with an Anquan Boldin touchdown reception that gave San Francisco its first lead of the game. This touchdown appeared to turn the page on the 49ers' first-half struggles.
San Francisco then tabbed on another touchdown—Kaepernick found Michael Crabtree on a beautiful 32-yard connection at the end of the third quarter.
But on a negative note, linebacker Patrick Willis was forced out of the game with a toe injury. Other injuries included defensive back Jimmie Ward and left guard Mike Iupati.
The Rams then made it a one-possession game with a field goal just before the two-minute warning, bringing them within a touchdown. But Austin Davis tossed an interception to rookie cornerback Dontae Johnson, who subsequently ran it back in for a touchdown—the 49ers' first end-zone score in the fourth quarter this season.
Johnson's play all but ended any St. Louis chance to stage a comeback. The 49ers go to 4-2 on the season, while the Rams drop to 1-4.
FINAL: 49ers 31, Rams 17
