MLB Playoffs 2014: TV Schedule, Live Stream, Bracket Predictions for Day 10

Sean ODonnellOct 13, 2014

The Baltimore Orioles need to figure out how to slow down the surging Kansas City Royals, and they need to do it fast. The Royals have been the Cinderella story of the 2014 MLB playoffs, but after six consecutive postseason victories, this team looks more like a juggernaut than anything.

Kansas City received some late-game heroics in Game 1 against the Orioles, as the team notched two 10th-inning home runs to secure a victory. Game 2 featured more of the same, as two ninth-inning runs notched another win. All of a sudden, the American League Championship Series heads to Kansas City with the Royals leading 2-0 after two impressive road victories.

Preview and Prediction

Baltimore's best hope of earning a necessary road victory in Kansas City rests on the arm of Wei-Yin Chen. He was phenomenal during the regular season, accumulating a record of 16-6 with an ERA of 3.54; however, his lone postseason start was awful. He was yanked after 3.2 innings against the Detroit Tigers after allowing five earned runs and posting an ERA of 12.27.

According to Pete Gilbert of WBAL TV, Chen may feel a bit more confidence with left-handed hitters in the Royals lineup:

Pitching for Kansas City will be Jeremy Guthrie. The right-hander has yet to make an appearance in the postseason, and he didn't have the strongest regular season, finishing with a 13-11 record and 4.13 ERA. Although, perhaps naming Guthrie the starter was a numbers game, via Jon Morosi of Fox Sports:

Regardless, it appears as though the Orioles have the upper hand on the mound in Game 3—but only from a starting standpoint.

Through two games, the Royals relievers have fared far better than members of Baltimore's bullpen. Wade Davis has been a strikeout machine, Kelvin Herrera has been just as solid and closer Greg Holland has notched back-to-back saves against Baltimore's lineup.

On the flip side, Darren O'Day has been dreadful for the Orioles through two games, and Zach Britton hasn't looked much better. O'Day fared much better in the regular season, but as Luke Jones of WNST.net notes, he's been on a downward slide since the beginning of September:

Both of these teams know how to get it done at the plate, but Kansas City has been more consistent through two games. Nick Markakis and Ryan Flaherty came through in the clutch for Baltimore in Game 1, but neither managed a hit in Game 2. Meanwhile, Mike Moustakas and Lorenzo Cain have been continuously brilliant for the Royals.

With the series now heading to Kansas City—in a stadium full of playoff-deprived fans hoping to see another October victory—and the Royals looking like the more well-rounded team at this point of the series, it's difficult to pick against them.

We should expect some nice offensive displays from both teams on Monday, but expect Kansas City to have Baltimore on the brink of elimination when the dust settles.

Prediction: Royals 7, Orioles 5
