The Pitching Matchup
Not Very Supportive

Lance Lynn has been excellent over the last month, but you wouldn't know it by his or the Cardinals' record in his most recent starts.
Despite Lynn posting an ERA of 2.45 in his last five outings, the Cardinals have lost every one of his starts. The bullpen could get some of the blame in two of the games, but the biggest reason for the futility is a lack of run support.
In the aforementioned starts, the Cardinals have scored a grand total of eight runs. It's hard to win when you score less than two runs per game—even if the pitcher is going as well as Lynn has been lately.
St. Louis will be hoping to put some points on the board on Sunday night to help its hard-luck pitcher. With the pressure of possibly facing an 0-2 series hole with Bumgarner lurking late in the series if need be, it's easy to see why this game might be looked at as a must-win for the Cardinals.
On Fire

Runs and wins haven't been hard to come by for the Giants when Jake Peavy has been on the mound since August. Of all the players acquired for the stretch run, few, if any, have paid bigger dividends than Peavy has for San Francisco.
While he hasn't been the innings-eating monster that Bumgarner has been, he's controlled the opposition's lineup long enough to turn the game over to a capable Giants bullpen. It's obviously been a winning combination.
The Giants have won the last seven games Peavy has started, and that includes Game 1 of the National League Division Series at Nationals Park against the Washington Nationals. The Giants hitters have given Peavy more than he's needed in most occasions.
During the streak, Peavy's ERA is a sparkling 1.02, and the Giants have scored an average of 4.2 runs per game. If the trend continues, the Cardinals will be in trouble in Game 2.
