With the 2014 Asian Games entering their final stages, China are far and away this year's victors in the medal ranks, but that won't stop the battles for dominance in each and every sector still to be decided.

South Korea Trump Court Favourites
For the second time this century, South Korea were named gold medallists in the men's basketball event, overcoming all obstacles to beat favourites Iran 79-77.

The hosts came out of the traps firing but suffered a mid-match lull that saw first-time finalists Iran mount a lead heading into the fourth quarter.
South Korea's last Asian Games triumph in men's basketball came in the 2002 edition, which, coincidentally enough, was also held on home soil in Busan.
Speaking after the victory, per Inside The Games, South Korean coach Yoo Jae-hak said:
"I feel absolutely honoured. I think we just made a miracle. We honestly had 10 percent chance of winning in today's match, and we made it with our passion. I really thank my team. We lost horribly in the World Championships, which discouraged the team from playing hard. In order to overcome this situation, senior players in my team have encouraged young players and themselves a lot, making the atmosphere of the team. Of course, it was not easy at all.
Through such efforts, I think we could beat Iran today. On top of that, we were so motivated since we hadn't won the gold medal for 12 years in the Asian Games.
"
Motivation arguably proved to be their best weapon of all, as Iran boasted a reserve of talent that made them heavy favourites coming into the match.
A two-point margin was opened up by the home team late, and the revival completed in dramatic fashion to claim another gold medal, one of the sweetest victories of these Games so far.
China Hammered For Doping Offence

Women's hammer throw champion Zhang Wenxiu was revealed as the sixth athlete to fail a doping test at these Asian Games on Friday, and she was stripped of her gold medal as a result.
China's Zhang was named champion on Sunday after throwing a Games-record distance of 77.33 metres, but the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) released a statement on Friday (h/t Paul Osborne of Inside The Games) that threw her feat into controversy:
"A pre-competition urine specimen collected on September 26 was found to contain Zeranol and its metabolite (ß-Zeranol), a prohibited substance in the WADA [World Anti-Doping Agency] Prohibited List 2014.
[...]
Zhang has been disqualified from the competition as well as these Games and as such has accreditation cancelled; and her gold medal withdrawn. These findings will now be forwarded to the competitor's national authorities, the Asian Athletics Association and the IAAF [International Association of Athletics Federations], and the World Anti-Doping Agency for further action on their part as per sanctions concerning eligibility.
"
Inside The Games explains that Zeranol is "a non-steroidal estrogen agonist," a substance that works with tissue receptors to simulate or promote certain hormonal functions:
On the whole, China are resounding shoo-ins to claim top spot at this year's Asian Games, already more than 100 medals clear of their nearest competition in the table.
However, Zhang's offence just goes to show that no matter how dominant a team might be, there is still a mountainous pressure to succeed on the individual level, a pressure that proved too much for Zhang's resolve.
These are the third Asian Games in which she has won a gold medal, but her stellar reputation now comes under fire, and China's highly fruitful Games have been slightly tinged by the unfortunate findings.
