Tottenham Hotspur vs. Besiktas: Winners and Losers from Europa League Game

Jerrad PetersOct 2, 2014

Demba Ba converted an 89th minute penalty as Besiktas came from behind to earn a much-deserved share of the points with Tottenham Hotspur, Thursday.

Harry Kane had given the hosts the lead in the 27th minute of their Europa League Group C appointment with the Turkish outfit, but a Vlad Chiriches handball in the dying moments provided Ba the opportunity to finally get his side back on level terms.

Besiktas were the more industrious of the two sides at White Hart Lane, although both remain level with two points apiece in the section—two behind leaders Asteras Tripoli.

Following are some of the winners and losers from the encounter.

Winner: Hugo Lloris, Who Was Heroic for Spurs

1 of 6

Once again, Hugo Lloris was worth valuable points to his side thanks to a series of heroic saves in the Tottenham net.

Shortly after the half-hour mark he got the slightest of touches to Demba Ba’s effort from in close following Jose Sosa’s cross, and in the 57th minute he had to be at full stretch to deny Olcay Sahan’s hard drive from distance.

Finally, with 14 minutes remaining, the France number-one kept Ba at bay once again with a vital stop that kept Spurs in front.

But for his effort the hosts would surely have come away from Thursday’s match empty-handed.

Loser: Olcay Sahan, Who Just Couldn’t Buy a Goal

You really can’t fault a guy for trying.

Until his withdrawal in the 72nd minute, no Besiktas player tried as often or as hard as Olcay Sahan, who registered four shots before being replaced by Mustafa Pektemek.

Shortly before the hour-mark, his third effort of the night was stopped by Lloris, and then in the 64th he failed to hit the target with an ambitious overhead kick.

Winner: Federico Fazio, Who Played His Best Match in a Tottenham Shirt

3 of 6

Federico Fazio hasn’t played all that much since arriving from Sevilla in an £8 million deal back in August, but based on Thursday’s performance he can be expecting some more first-team action in the very near future.

Fazio played his best match in a Tottenham shirt so far against Besiktas—which was important, given the poor display of Vlad Chiriches beside him.

In the buildup to Harry Kane’s opener, he cleverly avoided the intense Besiktas pressure before sliding the ball to Nabil Bentaleb, who picked out Kane.

Then, early in the second half, he stuck close to Demba Ba on a dangerous free kick and ended up winning a foul.

Winner: Atiba Hutchinson, Who Continues to Play Well Against English Opposition

4 of 6

Atiba Hutchinson was exceptional in Besiktas’ Champions League qualifying second leg against Arsenal, and he once again impressed in London on Thursday against Tottenham Hotspur.

No player on either side distributed the ball as accurately as the Canada international, who completed 94 percent of his passes while throwing himself into six tackles over the 90 minutes (statistics courtesy WhoScored).

Loser: Vlad Chiriches, Who Cost His Side Two Points

5 of 6

Vlad Chiriches cost Tottenham Hotspur two points on Thursday.

With only minutes remaining in normal time, the Romanian’s double-blunder compelled the referee to point to the spot, from which Demba Ba restored level terms.

First Chiriches appeared to handle the ball inside the area, and after doing so he pulled Mustafa Pektemek back while the two competed for a loose ball.

The 24-year-old’s distribution out of the defense was generally good, but on the back-foot he was a disaster waiting to happen.

And it did.

Winner: Harry Kane, Who Is Enjoying This Competition

6 of 6

Harry Kane found the back of the net in both legs of Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League play-off with AEL Limassol and he bagged his third goal of the competition in the first half against Besiktas on Thursday.

After receiving Nabil Bentaleb’s pass, the 21-year-old took a few steps with the ball at his feet before releasing a low, hard shot that beat the goalkeeper to the far corner of the net.

Given that Kane has also scored in the Capital One Cup this season, Spurs will no doubt be hoping he can translate some of his success in other competitions to the Premier League.
