Top 5 Moments from World Football in September
The month of September produced many memorable moments in the world of football.
One team performance and a handful of individual achievements and milestones make up our list of the top five moments of the month.
Big names like Cristiano Ronaldo and Francesco Totti are there, as are lesser lights such as Gustavo Bou.
Click on to begin the countdown.
5. Francesco Totti Becomes the Oldest Scorer in the Champions League
1 of 5
Three days after his 38th birthday, Roma legend Francesco Totti has become the oldest scorer in the history of the Champions League with a delightful goal against Manchester City on Tuesday night.
Totti beat Ryan Giggs' record of 37 years, 290 days, with the chip over City goalkeeper Joe Hart, but the devoted one-club man will no doubt be more pleased at having earned his side a valuable 1-1 away draw against the English giants.
4. Unstoppable Gustavo Bou Scores 5 Goals in a Week for Racing
2 of 5The last week of September was a productive one for Racing Club, who harvested seven points from three tough games to jump to fourth in Argentina's Primera Division.
And the driving force behind this purple patch was forward Gustavo Bou, who helped himself to five goals in six days.
Racing were in danger of losing pace with the ladder leaders after suffering consecutive losses, but they blasted their way back into contention on the back of Bou's hot streak.
His strike against Newell's Old Boys helped Racing to a 1-1 draw on Monday before a brilliant Bombonera brace gave La Academia a clasico win over fierce rivals Boca Juniors on Thursday.
Those goals were followed up by two more in Racing's 4-1 away win over Belgrano on Sunday to complete a fantastic week for the Avellaneda club.
3. Cristiano Ronaldo Makes It Rain Goals
3 of 5
With a whopping 10 goals to his name in September, Portuguese ace Cristiano Ronaldo had a prolific month, even by his own exceptional standards.
One week of the month was particularly satisfactory for CR7 fans as the Real Madrid man went on a scoring rampage.
First he bagged four goals in Los Blancos' 5-1 win over Basel in the Champions League, and then he backed that up with a cheeky hat-trick in the 8-1 demolition of Deportiva La Coruna in La Liga.
It seems there is no stopping the muscular attacker at present.
2. Leicester City Stun Manchester United
4 of 5
In perhaps the most shocking result in European football over the past month, Leicester City battled back from 3-1 down to defeat Louis van Gaal's Manchester United 5-3 on September 21.
Many United fans thought the club had turned the corner after saying goodbye to David Moyes and appointing the highly regarded Dutch coach to the helm for this campaign, but a series of poor results indicate the Red Devils still have a way to go before they get back to the level they were at under Sir Alex Ferguson.
The game set a number of unwanted records for United. It was the first time they had lost a game in the Premier League era after having taken a two-goal lead, the first time they had conceded four or more goals against a newly promoted club in the Premier League and the first time Leicester have scored four or more goals against United since 1963.
It is very unlikely that a capitulation at King Power Stadium would have occurred under Sir Alex's watch. Van Gaal certainly has his work cut out for him to get the side playing at a consistent level and restore the intimidating aura around the club.
1. Right-Back Miguel Layun Scores 4 Goals in a Match
5 of 5We consider it an amazing feat when prolific forwards such as Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi manage to bag four goals in a single games, so it is something truly incredible when a full-back manages the same achievement.
America's Miguel Layun did just that from his position of right-back in the Liga MX as his side downed Santos Laguna 4-1 on September 26.
The 26-year-old Mexico international started his one-man show with a half-volley in the 41st minute which landed in the back of the net before catching Laguna goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez in no-man's land with a long-range lob early in the second half to make it 2-0.
His third and fourth goals both involved incisive finishes after nice build-up play from team-mates. It was a great night for America, who lead the league by four points, and an unforgettable game for Layun.
