Why AC Milan Proved They're Better Than Last Season Despite Losing to Juventus

Matteo BonettiSep 20, 2014

Despite losing 1-0 to Juventus at the San Siro, Milan have proved to be a better side than last season early on in the new campaign, and fans should feel optimistic about the side going forward.

Last year, the squad looked flaccid and unorganized, unable to create much of anything in the offensive sector, rarely showing even the slightest glimpse of entertainment.

Just last week, the Hollywood-esque 5-4 victory over Parma made worldwide headlines. Even though a comedy of errors led to a few of the goals, coach Filippo Inzaghi showed that he's capable of bringing back the champagne football fans have been craving along with results.

The most important objective for Milan is getting back into the Champions League, and achieving a top three finish in Serie A can be done even if points are dropped against Juventus, a side many are predicting to be a Scudetto favorite yet again in the league.

Battering the provincial sides and not squandering points against relegation-stricken teams has to be Milan's primary focus.

The Rossoneri only gave up one goal against Juventus and even created a few chances in the first half, though they ran out of gas in the latter stages of the game. Had Keisuke Honda's header not been saved magnificently by Gianluigi Buffon, a different storyline would've most likely ensued.

Milan still cannot cope with the high pressure from a more talented side. Luckily, they won't face that too often in Serie A. There's no shame in dropping points to the Bianconeri.

Milan's first two matches of the season have given plenty of reason for optimism. First of all, the squad is a lot deeper than it was last season. The summer moves made near the end of the transfer session gave Milan a different look up front as well as in the midfield.

The inclusion of an experienced center back like Alex, a revelation like Jeremy Menez, the security of Giacomo Bonaventura and the dice roll with Fernando Torres is enough of a reason for renewed hope.

Also, Jeremy Menez has proved to be a difference maker when given full confidence and an opportunity to shine. A player of his talent has to be nurtured feel like he's an important part of the organization.

In the end, Milan were able to go toe-to-toe with Juventus despite not having a few crucial elements of the formation. The squad will only improve with the return of captain Riccardo Montolivo and Alex.
