Miami Football Recruiting: Latest Updates on 2015 Commits, Visits and Targets

David KenyonSep 19, 2014

The 2015 recruiting cycle continues to rage on throughout the college football regular season, and the Miami Hurricanes are still looking to add a few more top prospects.

Al Golden and his coaching staff have compiled the 11th-best class in the nation and No. 3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, according to 247Sports.

Three running backs and a safety highlight the solid haul of 22 current verbal commitments, but plenty of updates on commits and targets keep coming.

Jason Strowbridge Announces Commitment Date

1 of 5

Miami doesn't have many openings left for a position of depth, so defensive end Jason Strowbridge may be the final prospect taken at the spot.

And that may come quite soon. Via his Twitter account, Strowbridge said he will commit on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 1:00 p.m. ET.

The finalists are assumed to be Miami, Florida and Kentucky. One month ago, the 3-star said the 'Canes and Wildcats were recruiting him the hardest, according to Tito Benach of CanesInSight.

He tallied 12 sacks last year and would be a welcomed addition to a line that loses four-year starter Anthony Chickillo following the season.

'Canes Pushing for Ben Edwards

Tyrek Cole remains the highest-rated defensive back the 'Canes are targeting, but they recently started pushing for 4-star Ben Edwards.

Per Nate Adelson of 247Sports (subscription required), Miami isn't too late even after extending an offer in August.

The safety has given pledges to both Ohio State and Auburn, but each lasted no more than two-and-a-half months. Now, his 247Sports Crystal Ball reads 78 percent to Stanford, so his recruitment has been rather exciting.

"I learned to wait it out, be more patient, and really consider more options," Edwards told Adelson. "Now I research to find out everything I can about a school and take my time. Also I have the opportunity to watch the games for some of these teams. I want to see what they do with their safeties in whatever defensive scheme they run."

The Jacksonville-area standout plans to commit in December and might visit Miami before doing so.

Tevon Coney Unsure About Miami Visit

3 of 5

The team's biggest position of need is linebacker, but the top target is slipping away.

Tevon Coney, a 4-star who racked up an absurd 172 tackles last season for nearby Palm Beach Gardens, has the 'Canes behind Florida and Notre Dame.

While getting him on campus is absolutely imperative, it's not a done deal. Tom Loy of 247Sports (subscription required) notes Coney might visit Miami "when the Hurricanes host Florida State on Nov. 15."

Coney will remain a high priority until signing day regardless of whether he commits to another program.

DeAndre McNeal Sets Visit Date

4 of 5

Miami seldom dips into Texas for recruiting, but big-bodied DeAndre McNeal has caught Golden and Co.'s attention.

A 6'2", 228-pounder, the 3-star is obviously capable of absorbing the physical nature linebacker takes. However, per Adelson (subscription required), McNeal has aspirations to become a dominant wide receiver.

"

Everybody says I can play multiple positions, which is great, but I know deep down I'm a wide receiver. I train like somebody who plays that position, I catch like it, I get up field like it, and I make plays like it. I feel like that’s what I'll be in college because my doctor said I’m growing to 6'6". I’m a big dude but that extra height will help balance my weight. I’m going to be a freak, Andre Johnson or Calvin Johnson.

"

McNeal said the 'Canes are recruiting him as an X receiver and plans to visit campus on Dec. 12.

Jordan Cronkrite Wavering

5 of 5

Four-star athlete Jordan Cronkrite committed to Miami in April 2014, but the quartet of verbals at the running back position changed the tone of his recruitment, and he recently backed off his pledge.

According to David Lake of 247Sports (subscription required), Cronkrite has not talked to the Hurricanes for two months.

"Two months ago they told me that I was still their guy, but that was the last time I talked to them," Cronkrite said. "I don’t know how true that is if you are still going to let people commit at the position."

While the 5'11", 196-pound talent is technically uncommitted on recruiting boards following his announcement, he still considers himself committed, per Lake.

"It is not as solid as it once was, but I guess you could say I am committed to them," Cronkrite said. "I don't want to burn any bridges. I just want to do whatever is best for me."
