Chelsea Transfer News: Shrewd Summer Signings Leave Blues Looking Formidable
Chelsea are storming away atop of the Premier League table, and after the shrewd summer business conducted by Jose Mourinho, you have to say, their scintillating start has surprised nobody.

The club’s most recent swashbuckling performance came against Swansea City in Week 4, when a treble of strikes from Diego Costa and a late goal from Loic Remy helped see off the Welsh side in a 4-2 victory.

Ahead of the match, club captain John Terry spoke of how impressed he had been with the club’s summer purchases and why he felt the team is much better suited to challenge on all fronts this season, per the London Evening Standard:
"We have started brightly. You always hope that your new signings come in and hit the ground running and our players have done that.
Diego Costa has scored four goals and got off to a flyer. We are hoping he is available for the weekend against Swansea but he has made a good impact so far.
"

Indeed, he was available, and once again, he was on fire. The Spanish international striker has caught the eye with some wonderful forward displays, and sitting on seven goals from his first four Premier League games, Costa looks like a striker tailor-made for the ferocious nature of English football.
Sky Sports HQ gives us an indication of just how impressive he’s been during the opening weeks of his Chelsea career:
Didier Drogba was also brought back to Stamford Bridge this summer, and it’s clear that Mourinho sees Costa as a striker that has comparable stylistic attributes to the Ivorian. The former Atletico man is aggressive, powerful and has a raw, unpredictable edge that makes him engrossing to watch.

He may not be to the taste of everyone—Costa certainly harbours a mean streak—but antiheroes are a lot more entertaining anyway. For Chelsea fans, their new 25-year-old is the perfect addition.
Given his seven goals and unyielding impact, it’s difficult not to talk about Costa, but there are other fresh faces in this Chelsea squad that are already making an understated impact. One of those players is Cesc Fabregas, who has been creator in-chief for the Blues’ prolific No. 19.

The Spaniard has notched six assists since joining from Barcelona this summer, per WhoScored.com, and he’s quickly making progress in the all-time Premier League lists, too, as noted here by football writer Daniel Storey:
While Chelsea already boasted a surfeit of creative players in their squad, there are few midfield men on the planet who can pick a pass like Fabregas, and his ingenuity has added a frightening new edge to Mourinho’s attacking options.
Already, the duo of Costa and Fabregas are running their own personal battle to be dubbed signing of the season, but the deals are even more impressive when you consider the vast sums of money Chelsea brought in for some outgoing players this summer, too. Most notably, circa £78 million for the sales of David Luiz to Paris Saint-Germain and Romelu Lukaku to Everton.

There’s seemingly even more for the Stamford Bridge faithful to look forward to as well.
Thibaut Courtois has shown glimpses of his potential since his return from three consecutive loan spells at Atletico Madrid, but he has yet to show the form that saw him dubbed as the world's best during his time with the Spanish champions.
In addition, Filipe Luis in Mourinho's mould, and he will surely make a major impression at left-back with his energetic forays and diligent defensive work when given the opportunity.

Plus, in Remy, the Blues have another player that is a proven goalscorer in the Premier League. For him to get off the mark so early in his Chelsea career will have been a massive boost for the Chelsea boss. And from a romanticist perspective, the fans will be desperate to see Drogba find the back of the net in the iconic blue shirt once again.
All these factors should coalesce into a serious domestic and European challenge for Chelsea this season. If the early signs are anything to go by, there are very few teams around that’ll be capable of stopping them.
