A.J. Green Injury: Updates on Bengals Star's Toe and Return

Tyler ConwaySep 14, 2014

Updates from Sunday, Sept. 21

AJ Green reeled in six passes for 102 yards in the Bengals' 33-7 win over the Titans, and after the game Richard Skinner of the Cincinnati Enquirer had an update:

"

"I felt good," said Green. "Missing the game last week, I felt bad not being out there with my brothers. You can't take this stuff for granted. It felt good to get back out there and make a couple of plays early. I'm glad we've got the bye week to heal up and get to 100 percent and then I'll be ready to go for the rest of the season."

Green actually came out of Sunday's game a couple of times due to two different minor injuries, once when he said he rolled his ankle and another time when he got hit in the genitals.

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green left Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons and will not return after suffering a right toe injury.

The team originally announced via Twitter that his return was questionable:

Green was later ruled out for the game, via Jay Adams of AtlantaFalcons.com:

ProFootballTalk reported on the extent of Green's injury:

Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com reported on Green's injured toe after the game:

"

It appears that A.J. Green won’t be lost for a long period of time and if he doesn’t play next Sunday against Tennessee, indications are he had a negative MRI and he’ll be ready after the bye week for the Oct. 5 game in New England. He wasn’t on crutches with his right toe injury and watched the last three quarters of Sunday’s 24-10 victory over Atlanta on the sideline.

"

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on what Green told colleague Bob Holtzman after the game:

Green, 26, limped off the field during the Bengals' first drive and was examined by the training staff on the sideline before heading to the locker room. He was not targeted on Cincinnati's 13-play, 69-yard drive that ended in a Mike Nugent field goal.

The Pro Bowl wideout is coming off a six-catch, 131-yard game in a Week 1 win over the Baltimore Ravens. Green caught a 77-yard touchdown from Andy Dalton with 4:58 remaining, a big play that wound up being the game-winning score.

The toe injury comes after Green spent most of his week on the injury list due to a sore foot. He was limited on Wednesday and sat out Thursday before returning as a full participant in Friday's practice, per the Bengals' official website.

With Green out, the Bengals passing game will obviously suffer. Mohamed Sanu will likely see the most targets with Marvin Jones and Tyler Eifert also out with injuries. It'll be interesting to see how Cincinnati decides to attack Atlanta's porous secondary with Green out of the game.

Sunday may also prove a test for how dependent Dalton is on having one of the NFL's best receivers at his side. Either way, the Bengals will have their fingers crossed that Green's absence is a short one.
