Eagles vs. Colts: TV Info, Spread, Injury Updates, Game Time and More

Chris RolingSep 13, 2014

After a defensive-minded affair between AFC North foes Thursday to start Week 2, the slate ends Monday with an exclamation point, as two offensive powerhouses collide when the Philadelphia Eagles visit the Indianapolis Colts.

The Colts return home after not having enough in the tank to outgun Denver and Peyton Manning, while Chip Kelly's offense turned in one good half to put down Jacksonville in dramatic fashion.

A Nick Foles-Andrew Luck showdown does not have the same ring to it as, say, Luck-Manning, but with rather mediocre defenses tasked with shutting down prolific offenses, the scoreboard should be alight in a must-see edition of Monday Night Football.

Strength vs. Strength

Let's not pretend this one was booked for a national spotlight with strong defensive showings in mind (that was reserved for Thursday Night Football between Pittsburgh and Baltimore this week).

In terms of total defense last season, Indianapolis came in at No. 20. Philadelphia? No. 29.

After a ho-hum offseason for both teams, Indianapolis went out last week and allowed Manning to go for 269 yards and three scores en route to the 31-24 loss.

Philadelphia's offense was more criminal, as it allowed Chad Henne to gain 266 yards and a pair of scores, with 110 yards and the scores going to an unknown wideout (Allen Hurns).

No, this one is all about the offense.

As Mike Jurecki of Fox Sports 910 records, both teams were among the top in offensive output last week:

On one side of the matchup is Foles, who threw for 322 yards and a pair of touchdowns last week, which overshadowed his horrific play in the first half. With DeSean Jackson out of the picture, Jeremy Maclin assumed the role of No. 1 wideout quite well and caught four passes for 97 yards and a touchdown.

Believe it or not, LeSean McCoy had himself a quiet day with just 74 yards on the ground, but he'll surely have no issue posting eye-popping numbers against that shaky Indianapolis defense.

On the other side is Luck, who continues to do it all on his own thanks to a lack of a running game—actual running backs carried the ball just nine times last week, while the team as a whole racked up just three yards per carry.

Kelly stressed his concern over a matchup with Luck in the week leading up to the contest, as captured by Jeff Skversky of WPVI-TV 6abc:

Meanwhile, Reggie Wayne was his usual self with nine receptions for 98 yards and, T.Y. Hilton pitched in with 41 yards on five catches—the latter is sure to have a major showing Monday if Hurns could against that Philadelphia defense.

In what seems set to devolve into a shootout rather quickly, whichever quarterback can best use the weapons around him stands the best chance. Well, that or it comes down to the final possession.

Those Left to Fill the Void

For both teams, it is a darn good thing that there is an extra day of rest before the showdown on Monday night. Both are dealing with significant losses, and even an extra 24 hours may not be enough to sort things out.

The biggest problem for Indianapolis resides on the defensive side of the ball. Robert Mathis will miss the rest of the season, and while he was slated to miss the contest anyway due to a suspension, the news only highlights the fact the Colts are downright torrid when it comes to rushing the passer.

Indianapolis scored just one sack on Manning last week, and while Foles is no Manning, the safe bet is on Kelly dialing up quick hits to speedy players when the Colts bring extra players on a rush because they simply cannot generate consistent pressure in a normal package.

Believe it or not, though, the issues for Philadelphia are even bigger.

Pro Bowl left guard Evan Mathis is now headed to injured reserve, as is Allen Barbre, who was only in the lineup to begin with to fill in for a suspended Lane Johnson. Matt Tobin is also hobbled with an iffy ankle.

The wealth of issues in front of Foles means even Dennis Kelly, who was inactive for each game last season, will get a shot at playing time.

"All the guys that are active have a chance to play, and we could make a roster move again," offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur told the Eagles' official website (via STATS LLC on ESPN.com). "So we'll just sort it out as we go. Anybody that's active can start, so that's the way we're going to take it."

At the end of Week 2, a pair of surefire playoff contenders have to prove the depth is there for such a run. Don't blink.

Prediction

PHILADELPHIA, PA - SEPTEMBER 07: Jeremy Maclin #18 of the Philadelphia Eagles celebrates his 68 yard touchdown with teammate Brent Celek #87 during the fourth quarter against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Lincoln Financial Field on September 7, 2014 in Phil

Kelly's words concerning Luck are in no way an exaggeration, but like his loss to Denver last week, the man can only do so much against another prolific offense.

Foles does not even have to lean on players such as Maclin out of the backfield. Last weekend, Indianapolis took away the outside receivers, which saw Denver tight end Julius Thomas light up the scoreboard with seven receptions for 104 yards and three scores.

It just so happens that tight ends are a bigger point of Kelly's offense this year, as one can glean from Zach Ertz's three receptions for 77 yards and a score last week.

Forget the home-field advantage factor, too, as NFL Network's Gil Brandt raises the point that Foles loves the pressure of road games:

Were Mathis able to suit up, this one might have a different tune. But Indianapolis simply cannot bring enough pressure to deter the league's best offenses.

Prediction: Eagles 28, Colts 21
