Rob GoldbergSep 9, 2014

Updates from Wednesday, Sept. 10

ESPN's Josina Anderson reports a statement from an anonymous source discussing negotiations between the Bills and C.J. Spiller's representatives:

"

Following up: A source told me this morning that the meeting b/w C.J. Spiller's reps and #Bills GM Doug Whaley was just 'introductory and preliminary in nature. No numbers were discussed. No proposals were exchanged.' There's hope that terms for an extension can be agreed upon before the end of the league year.

The Buffalo Bills reportedly want to keep C.J. Spiller around for a long time.

Chris Brown of BuffaloBills.com reports the team is attempting to keep the running back from becoming a free agent at season's end:

Spiller finished with 64 yards from scrimmage and a receiving touchdown in the team's Week 1 win over the Chicago Bears. He also served as the team's primary kickoff returner, although he only had one attempt for 29 yards.

Although it is rare to see a starting running back play special teams, head coach Doug Marrone explained, "As much as we can get our playmakers out there whether it be punt returns or kickoff returns we have to make sure we explore that," via Brown.

This all-around play shows how valuable the 27-year-old player is for the Bills. He was also the clear go-to option on offense despite Fred Jackson and Anthony Dixon also spending time in the backfield, as Mike Clay of Pro Football Focus noted:

Throughout his career, Spiller has proven to be one of the most dynamic players in the NFL. The former Clemson star really turned heads in 2012 when he finished with 1,244 rushing yards at an incredible average of 6.0 yards per carry. He also added 459 receiving yards that season.

Unfortunately, he dealt with injuries in 2013 that limited him even when he was on the field.

The Bills are hoping to see some more of the magic from two years ago in 2014 as he once again becomes one of the best in the league at his position. This will help him remain with the team for the long term with a new contract.

With a young core of EJ Manuel, Sammy Watkins and more, re-signing Spiller could be the last piece for a bright future in Buffalo.
