FedEx Cup 2014 Odds: Updated Outlook After the BMW Championship

Ben AlberstadtSep 7, 2014

As the playoffs roll on to their final event, we've got another batch of FedEx Cup 2014 Odds cooking.

At the BMW Championship, Billy Horschel got the job done, a week after a chunked approach shot at the 72nd hole cost him a potential victory at the Deutsche Bank Championship. Horschel's nearest challenger, Bubba Watson, finished at 12 under for the tournament, two strokes behind Billy Horschel.

Both players will enter the Tour Championship with a good chance to capture the FedEx Cup. Who else has a good chance to lift the cup?

Click through to see.

Chris Kirk

1 of 8

FedEx Cup standing: 1

Odds to win FedEx Cup: 30-1

Playoff performance: The Barclays: T53; Deutsche Bank Championship: 1; BMW Championship: T36

The lowdown

After winning last week's Deutsche Bank Championship, Chris Kirk was due for a letdown in Colorado. His win came out of the blue: Kirk missed the cut and finished tied for 53rd prior to winning in Boston, and he's had just four top-10s this year.

Although he's presently first in the FedEx Cup standings, he's never competed in a Tour Championship in his career. Don't expect him to win in Atlanta lacking that experience.

Jason Day

2 of 8

FedEx Cup standing: 10

Odds to win FedEx Cup: 20-1

Playoff performance: The Barclays: T2; Deutsche Bank Championship: T7; BMW Championship: W/D

The lowdown

Jason Day's fragility this season is concerning. He withdrew from the BMW Championship, and it's unclear what kind of shape he'll be in for the Tour Championship.

As an update from RotoWorld indicated:

"

Here we go again. Just when he was flashing consistently strong form, he's hit with another ailment. Day landed his approach on the green at the par-4 ninth hole before walking off Cherry Hills. He was birdie-free 3-over-par on the day and 3-over through 26 holes. The Aussie was the only golfer to record top 10s in the first two FedExCup Playoffs events.

"

Rickie Fowler

3 of 8

FedEx Cup standing: 9

Odds to win FedEx Cup: 16-1

Playoff performance: The Barclays: T9; Deutsche Bank Championship: T23; BMW Championship: T4

The lowdown

The BMW Championship marked a third consecutive solid performance in the FedEx Cup playoffs for Rickie Fowler. Weekend rounds of 66, 68 have him positioned at seventh in the FedEx Cup standings heading into the Tour Championship.

Fowler didn't make it to the Tour Championship last year, but he finished tied for 23rd at the tournament in 2012. At seventh in the standings, he's well positioned and on form heading to East Lake.

Sergio Garcia

4 of 8

FedEx Cup standing: 13

Odds to win FedEx Cup: 15-1

Playoff performance: The Barclays: T57; Deutsche Bank Championship: Did not play; BMW Championship: T4

The lowdown

After taking a week off to rest in the Hamptons, Sergio Garcia came out swinging at Cherry Hills. He was six under for the day heading to the 17th hole on Sunday when he hit a chip into the water and eventually made a triple-bogey eight on the hole. Had he simply managed to par the hole and par his final hole, he would have finished tied for second.

Thus, Garcia looks good to go. He finished tied for ninth at the Tour Championship last year and will certainly be among the favorite to win the tournament. However, to win the cup, he'll need a victory and some help from those at the top of the ranking.

Adam Scott

5 of 8

FedEx Cup standing: 12

Odds to win FedEx Cup: 14-1

Playoff performance: The Barclays: T15; Deutsche Bank Championship: T16; BMW Championship: T8

The lowdown

As I said last week about Adam Scott:

"

Lately, it seems like you can just pencil Adam Scott in for a top-10 finish. The Australian hasn't finished outside the top 20 in a tournament since The Players Championship.

And although he didn't contend at either of the first two playoff events, he was steady for three rounds in each event. In both tournaments, he was undone by one poor rounda third-round 75 at The Barclays and a first-round 73 at the Deutsche Bank Championship.

"

The exact same thing holds true following Scott's eighth-place finish at the BMW. If he'd played Thursday the way he played Sunday score (66), he'd have tied Horschel.

Scott is on form heading to Atlanta, where he finished tied for 14th last year.

Bubba Watson

6 of 8

FedEx Cup standing: 3

Odds to win FedEx Cup: 12-1

Playoff performance: The Barclays: T30; Deutsche Bank Championship: T29; BMW Championship: 2

The lowdown

Somehow, Bubba Watson is third in the FedEx Cup standings. Two decent performances in the first two playoff events and a near-win in the third, and the ordinary Floridian is poised to raise the FedEx Cup.

Watson tied for fifth at the Tour Championship in 2012. He hit 75 percent of greens in regulation for the week at the BMW Championship and led the field in strokes gained: tee to green

Bubba's heating up at just the right time and could be poised to overpower East Lake.

Billy Horschel

7 of 8

FedEx Cup standing: 2

Odds to win FedEx Cup: 12-1

Playoff performance: The Barclays: CUT; Deutsche Bank Championship: T2; BMW Championship: 1

The lowdown

Billy Horschel rebounded from his final-hole faux pas at the Deutsche Bank Championship with four solid rounds of golf at Cherry Hills. The win vaulted him into second place in the FedEx Cup standings. Suddenly, Horschel is the hottest player in golf.

More good news for Horschel fans: Billy finished tied for seventh at the Tour Championship last year. Thus, he's returning to a course he's played well with his game in fine form.

Rory McIlroy

8 of 8

FedEx Cup standing: 4

Odds to win FedEx Cup: 10-1

Playoff performance: The Barclays: T22; Deutsche Bank Championship: T5; BMW Championship: T8

The lowdown

Rory McIlroy's weekend was marred by a pair of four-putts (see one above).

While he's clearly slowed from the torrid pace that saw him win the final two majors of the season, McIlroy returns to a venue where he had success in 2012. The last time the Ulsterman teed it up in a Tour Championship, he finished tied for 10th. A final-round 74 kept his finish at East Lake that year from being much better. Translation: Rory can play East Lake.
