Smith later returned to the game, via the Ravens:

Smith is the only true deep threat in the Ravens' receiving corps, but he's also capitalized on his size and polished up his route running to become the team's No. 1 target in the passing game.

The 2014 NFL campaign marks a contract year for Smith, who made it clear before the season began that he wants to remain with the franchise for the long haul, per Fox Baltimore:

But there is hope. From the beginning of training camp, it has been evident that veteran free-agent arrival Steve Smith would bring a steady presence to the receiving corps.

Sportscaster Gerry Sandusky saw how Smith established a strong rapport with Super Bowl MVP quarterback Joe Flacco from the start:

That means the Ravens, presuming they play their characteristic strong defense and continue improving their rushing attack, should fare fine without Torrey Smith in the short term. Should the dynamic playmaker miss an extended period of time, though, it's unclear how far Baltimore can go with the 35-year-old Steve Smith as Flacco's top wideout.

Head coach John Harbaugh knows how to rally a team through adversity. Look no further than Baltimore's run to Super Bowl XLVII glory. The Ravens backed into the playoffs by losing four of their last five regular-season games, and then hoisted the Lombardi Trophy.

Coming off an 8-8 campaign and now being impacted by Torrey Smith's injury, Harbaugh has to rally his players again to keep pace in the gritty, tough AFC North division.
