Sorting Through What's Left: Who Do the Cleveland Cavaliers Select at 30?
I have stated, as have many others, that the draft is a crap shoot, which is especially true this season due to the parity and lack of can't-miss prospects.
And so it's especially hard to predict who the Cleveland Cavaliers will select with their first-round pick, 30th overall, and last in the first round.
While there remains a strong possibility the Cavaliers and their thick-pocketed owners purchase a pick a little earlier in the first round, let's assume they stay put.
So as a result, the Cavaliers board is a bit broader than in previous years, with the possibility that players projected in the lottery can fall to them, or that players with second round grades are the only ones left.
Here's a stab at a list of prospects I think the Cavaliers should select in tonight's NBA Draft:
Derrick Brown SF/Xavier, 6'9" 230 lbs
Brown fills a need because he provides the length to cover the likes of Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu on the perimeter. With his developing three-point shot, Brown could also fill another need.
But he played as a bruising power forward in college, so it's unknown how he makes the transition to the NBA. Overall, he's a good combo forward who could help the Cavaliers here.
DaJuan Summers SF/Georgetown, 6'11" 230 lbs
Summers went from a second round pick to a mid 20s first rounder after impressing in pre-draft workouts and at the combine. A legit 6'11", Summers is an excellent three point shooter with the size to defend on the perimeter. He is very similar to Brown, except more polished from outside and less adept in the post. He's the best prospect of the three.
Sam Young SG/Pittsburgh, 6'6" 210 lbs
Young is a good perimeter defender and a superb rebounder for his size. His ability to play the 2-guard should appeal to the Cavaliers, who need bigger guards to complement the small trio of Mo Williams and Daniel Gibson (each 6'1") and Delonte West (6'3"). Young is also a tremendous defender, and could serve as energy off the bench.
Other possibilities: Wayne Ellington SG/North Carolina, Nick Calathes PG/Florida, Omri Casspi SF/Maccabi Tel Aviv (Israel)
The Cavaliers filled one of their three needs when they acquired Shaquille O'Neal today, giving them a presence inside who can guard Dwight Howard and is an upgrade over Zydrunas Ilgauskas offensively.
Which leaves them with two pressing needs remaining. This draft can provide them with length and shooting on the perimeter and or bigger guards.
Stay tuned.
