2009 Tour De France: Lance Armstrong Is Back!
He’s back!
Lance Armstrong, seven times Tour de France winner, will ride again this year. His amazing success as a cyclist has made him a hero to many athletes around the world. His battle, determination, and recovery from cancer have made him a legend and icon to both athletes and people from all walks of life.
Armstrong’s early cycling years were impressive but not prolific. Just as he was making a true name for himself on the cycling circuit at the young ripe age of 25, in October of 1996, Armstrong was diagnosed with testicular cancer. It then spread to his lungs, abdomen, and brain. The odds were not in his favor when his doctor gave him a less than 50% chance of survival. Armstrong not only beats the odd, he came back stronger, savvier, and more determined. His comeback began just two years later in 1998 when Armstrong once again put his foot to the bike pedals.
Armstrong’s Tour de France career is renowned. In 1999 he won his first of seven, and he continued the winning streak until 2005. With a great deal of emotion and fighting back tears, Armstrong announced his retirement shortly before the 2005 Tour de France. Armstrong said he wanted to spend more time with his family and pursue personal endeavors.
During his Tour de France sabbatical, Armstrong focused his attention on raising awareness and funds for the foundation that bears his name. He also became a familiar name in the tabloids when he dated musician Sheryl Crowe and actress Kate Hudson.
Armstrong’s career has not escaped controversy as he has been pestered with accusations of using banned performance enhanced substances. He has never failed a drug test and maintains his innocence and clean record.
As the 2009 Tour de France approaches, the event has been given a new spin with Armstrong’s entry and comeback. This year’s event will take place from Saturday, July 4 to Sunday, July 26. The 21 grueling stages will take riders over mountains, through terrains, and along scenic but challenging roads. While not a favorite to win, Armstrong will once again be a favorite among American fans. Does Lance have a chance—you bet he does.
