Randy Foye was traded by the Minnesota Timberwolves along with Mike Miller to the Washington Wizards for three players and the fifth overall pick in the NBA Draft.
David Kahn, the new General Manager of the Minnesota Timberwolves, was eager to make a name for himself.
He was intrigued, though only for a short period, about the idea of acquiring Phoenix Suns forward Amare Stoudemire for center Al Jefferson, which would have been an awful first decision.
Before that rumor surfaced, he was behind the firing of head coach Kevin McHale, who spent 15 years with the organization. Then, he dangled Kevin Love, who was their first round pick in the 2008 NBA Draft and who broke the McHale firing via his Twitter page.
Making players temporarily available doesn’t make him a standout. Following through on bold trades does.
The Timberwolves currently hold the sixth, 18th, and 28th overall picks. Evidently, that wasn’t enough for Kahn.
Therefore, when he heard the Washington Wizards didn’t want the fifth overall pick, he snapped at the opportunity. The GM with as much basketball experience as me traded Randy Foye, who was infamously acquired for Brandon Roy, and sharpshooter Mike Miller to the Wizards for three lesser talents—Oleksiy Pecherov, Etan Thomas, Darius Songaila—along with the fifth overall pick.
Now, Kahn’s in the driver’s seat. Because he has back-to-back picks in the first round, he can take two prized talents of his choosing.
Obviously, since he traded Foye, he’ll select a point guard. He will have the tough decision to choose between Brandon Jennings, Jonny Flynn, Stephen Curry, Tyreke Evans, Jeff Teague, or Jrue Holiday.
I don’t have any insider information, but I’m guessing he’ll go after a scoring point guard rather a traditional pass-first point guard, given that the Timberwolves already have Sebastian Telfair.
This means that Evans or Curry should certainly catch his eye. The reason I say this is because to replace Foye, they need to replace his scoring production, which either Evans or Curry could do right away.
Miller’s offense will need to be replaced as well, which is why snagging the sixth pick was so important. Now, Kahn can take a point guard, then also select shooting guard Demar DeRozan or, though this may be a reach, Gerald Henderson Jr.
Whichever way he goes, the Timberwolves can only improve. The draft overall is considered weak, but when a franchise holds two of the first six picks, the talent is plentiful.
Pretty good first move by Kahn, eh Minnesota fans?
